Turn on your second wii remote
I had the same problem but I fixed it with the same way I did for some other Wii game, I forgot it's name. Anyway you press the home button, click the bar at the bottom that you can't miss, click reconnect, and from there on you should know what to do.
You can play 2 player mode by first turning the second Wii Remote on. If you don't have a second Wii Remote, you can't do 2 player. Then check if it's on by waving it across the screen. If there is an orange cursor shaped like a star with "P2" under it, it worked!
Turn on the 2nd wii remote. But this mode (2player mode) only is for helping mario to jump higher, stun enemies, collect starbits and stuff like that. Hope this helps!
2 player mode is not recommended, the 2nd player just controls a pointer to get gems
