How do you fish for goldenfish, I've tried the quest a couple of times and can't do it

You have to use goldenfish bait. Go to any fishing area and throw it in.

go to area 10 and all the way to the edge of the land on the right side then fish look for the big spikey yellow ones but catch the other ones so the goldfish will come

You will have to use goldenfish bait. You can make it when combining snakebee larva and fireflies. When using goldenfish bait only golden fish will bait so if you don't get any bites move to a different spot. Hope this helps
