There is no best hero, each of the three classes has strengths and weaknesses. It is recommended that you choose the class of hero whether it is melee or ranged that best suits your gaming style and then focus on upgrading it by beating stages to earn skill points.
Another way to improve your hero is to rank them up in PvP mode so you earn the perks. You will start from the Squire division where you will not get any perks but as you reach higher divisions you will be rewarded with them. Defeating players in the PvP mode will not only rank up your hero it will also earn you coins.
