Starfield Companions Guide

Updated: 14th Sep 2023 by Team SuperCheats

You will be able to find Starfield companions all over the cosmos. They give your crew unique benefits that will make your journey through space a little easier. This Starfield Companions Guide will tell you how the companions work, how to recruit them, the difference between crew members and companions, and how to recruit crew members.

What are Starfield Companions

Companions in Starfield are characters that stay at your side as you explore the many planets in Starfield's cosmos. They will automatically help you out in combat when you encounter hostility during your journey and they can also be used to store some of your stuff if you have no room in your inventory.

Different Types of Starfield Companions

The different types of Companions in Starfield don't function the same way, there are basically four categories:

- Constellation Companions

- Optional Companions

- Hireable Companions

- Crew members

The main Companions in Starfield are the four Constellation Companions, they are the only ones you can speak to regularly and pursue a romance with. All the companions regardless of their category have their own set of skills, which can help you decide what kind of role to assign them. There are upward of 25 different Companions in the game.

How to Recruit Starfield Companions

It is not difficult to recruit Starfield Companions. You simply have to find a companion, speak to them, and agree to hire them. There are though certain Companions that require you to complete a certain mission to unlock them. When a Companion agrees to join you will be automatically taken to the 'Crew' menu to assign them to your ship or outposts.

The Best Companion in Starfield

Each of the Starfield Companions comes with predetermined skills, some of which will be more useful than others. Without a doubt, the best Companions in Starfield for most playthroughs are the Constellation Companions as they both tie into the narrative and can help you in certain 'Persuasion' conversations. They also come with three skills instead of two that you can take advantage of to help you in tricky situations. Overall though, Sam Coe, Andreja, and Vasco are the best Companions as they are also competant and effective in combat situations.
