The first thing you will need to do in Starfield is get a ship in order to traverse and explore the cosmos. There are several ways in which you can get your hands on one, these include purchasing one, building one, or stealing one. It is recommended that you try out as many ships as you can so you are able to find one you feel comfortable with. One way that you can do this is to sell a ship to get the money to try out another.
How to Level Up a Ship
To upgrade your ship in Starfield you must find a Ship Technician NPC at a landing port. Ship Technician NPCs can be found in cities, such as New Atlantis. When you locate one you need to talk with them and select the 'I'd like to view and modify my ships' option. This will then bring up a screen that has 'Ship Builder' and 'Upgrade Ship' button prompts in the lower-right corner.
Press the 'Upgrade Ship' button to be taken to a screen that enables you to see your current modules, these include your various 'Weapons Systems', 'Engines', 'Shields', 'Reactors', and 'Grav Drive'.
To upgrade a module you just click the one you want to upgrade and then select one of the new options. To increase the number of modules available you need to invest points into the Starship Design skill (Tech, Tier 3). For each point in Starship Design, you will unlock new and improved modules that you can purchase for all of your ships. This is the easiest way to upgrade your ship in Starfield as you simply have to pick the modules you want and have them automatically placed on your ship, filling the space where the old module was connected.
Another way to make upgrades to your ship in Starfield is by selecting the 'Ship Builder' button to bring up the Ship Builder menu. This option enables you to customize your ship more as it allows you to move modules around and also use new cockpits, landing gears, and bays. The Ship Builder option also lets you add new rooms and chambers to make your ship bigger.
In the Ship Builder menu, there is an 'Add' button which will give you access to a list of new modules that you can attach to your ship. The circle icons that also appear on your ship when you access the list of modules are the attachment nodes indicating where you can connect modules.
There is the possibility that errors will flash up in the lower-right corner as you attach modules. If you press the 'Flight Check' button when this happens you will be able to view a full list of errors and warnings regarding your current design.
