Introduction

Gamespot: 5.5/10
IGN: 6/10
You must ask yourself, are these true? Is Red Steel just that bad of a game? Or is this another case of an over-hyped game not meeting expectations?
In any case, Red Steel is a nice break from your standard first-person shooter (FPS for short).

Graphics

They may not be the most stunning visuals ever, but they are easily on par with most third year Gamecube games. Considering Red Steel was built mostly using a GCN dev kit, thats pretty good. But the Wii is capable of better. The physics are pretty good but not perfect, seeing that you can shoot a fish tank and see the glass shatter and the water spill just as it should; yet you can shoot at a table with a Type 12 all day without it breaking.

Sound

The music fits the game extremely well. The speaker in the Wii remote really comes into play here, as you can hear your shots from the remote to the TV. Re-loading is also sounded on the remote, as well as sword clashes; giving you and increased feel of immersion. However, some of the sounds can be a bit scratchy if you have the speaker turned up to high, this is easily fixed though.

Gameplay

The Wii really pulls through here. It may be an FPS, but the fact that you are pointing at the screen to aim, and (more or less) actually swinging the sword gives you an level of immersion that as never been seen before on a home console. This is definitely not a run-and-gun game, as you can only take about 4 hits before having to duck and cover. Considering for most of the game, you will be surrounded by people with Uzis or SCARS, 4 hits isnt that many. You will find yourself making ample use of cover and sniper positions; meaning you'll have add a certain level skill and strategy to your attacks if you want to stay alive. The sword fights are what set this game apart from other FPSs though. They may not be 1:1, but they are still rather challenging and fun in their own right; some people you may have to kill, while others are so defensive youll have to try to break their sword. Nevertheless it is still a launch game, as such the controls can be shaky. The curser can (rarely) rapidly jump around for a second, and the sword controls arent as sensitive as they should be, seeing that some special moves can be hard to pull off.

Lastability

For an FPS, it's extremely long lasting. What with trying to max out your respect points, perfecting your zoom, and two alternate endings that can only be unlocked by beating the game twice. The fact that you can go back and re-play a level and try for a higher score, instead of playing the whole game over, adds to the lasability (is that even a word?) greatly.

Overall

Most people tend to over-look Red Steel based on low review scores. This is truly their loss, as Red Steel is a superb game. Bear in mind that this game was hyped to no end when it was first announce, and people (reviewers included) had unrealistic expectations of it. As such, they gave it bad reviews based on what they thought it should have been, not what it realistically could have been. Alas, we see another great game go by the way-side from over-hype. Red Steel may have it's weaknesses, but it's gameplay and innovative controls more then make up for them. This is a definite worth a buy, or at least a rent.
