In Need of help to destroy the tie fighter

I know this may be such a simple thing to do but things are only easy if you know what to do.
I have just started this game but I can't destroy the tie fighter near the start as it has a shield on it!
Do I have to shoot somewhere to get rid of the shield or do I have to just keep shooting it
PLEASE Help as the psp will get thrown out of the window...

NB - Im abit dissapointed so far with it

Got it. Lock onto the target, then auto pilot (triangle)
