What do the skill points do exactly I have got most of them but don't know why the hell I tried

I noticed when you get a skill point the checkpoint also act as save points... otherwise you're doomed to start again from the last save.
Trouble is you don't know what you have to do to get a skill point, its just dumb luck if you do something
that warrants the skill rating?? I'm sure there are posts online that tell you how to achieve all the skill points though.
When on the starting screen go to location select a level then on the bottom it tells you what you have to do to earn your skill points
