You're referring to Genesis Avatar. All you need to do is to damage the sword whenever he puts it on the ground. Use Costly Punch or materias similar to that so you can damage the sword greatly. But you should kill the enemies that spawn whenever the sword is slammed on the ground because they'll annoy you.
