Introduction

This is my review on Pokemon ranger, basically Pokemon ranger is a game where it involves extensive use of the Nintendo DS' stylus. The basic idea of the game is to caputure angry or distressed Pokemon and release them back to their natural habitat. You start the game with limited space to walk around in and not much options. But as you progress more and more into the game your skills define and you will be able to make more difficult and complicated caputures. The game seems hard at the start but when you do more captures and have more skills at the game you will be a master at it.

Graphics

A first for a handheld Pokemon game. Its in 3D. It may be a little weird when you start off especially if you are a heavy Pokemon fan and have been playing those boring 2D platformers for so many years. Once you get the hang of the new controls and movement (really the stylus moving the character is a really great idea) you are ready to start off in your new adventure. The Pokemon graphics are a little sloppy and could use a touch of more effort. Apart from that riding a 3D lapras across the sea is pretty awesome.

Sound

I have to admit this the sounds have been kind of the same ever since Pokemon ruby and sapphire. Like the Pokemon calls and the music but this sort of makes it a bit better. Like the humming of the capture line when you cirlce a Pokemon and the fun sound of success when you succefully accomplish a capture. Also another first in Pokemon history you can actually hear the players footsteps! Now thats pretty cool! As for the new music it's pretty fair and I like the new, funny melody! Unlike the constant looping of the music in the other Pokemon games. The musical instuments that the evil band the go-rock-squad plays are very pretty too.

Gameplay

The storyline of this game is fun and child-friendly. The game starts off with you choosing a gender and your name. You are then finnaly accepted as a Pokemon ranger after your seventh letter to the ringtown ranger base. You are then shipped off onto a ferry to the southern port of Fall city where a you find a strange box jiggling out pops a minun and you then mett your ranger leader, Spencer. After that you and your leader are confronted by an angry houndoom which your leader catches with ease. You must then catch the simple Minun who eventually follows you as a "partner pokemon" you are then presented with a spiffy ranger certificate you only get to see the certificate once so make the most of it while you can. The game consists of varoius captures and defeating the musical go-rock-squad. There is also a nice new feature called ranger net where you get to play special missions and catch rare Pokemon I'm not going to give this all away in this review but there is a manaphy egg that you can unlock using a password. There is also a whole range of new things to do once you complete the game such as capture challegers (which they could make a bit better and more harder) and special missions.

Lastability

The lastability for this game is poor. Once you have captured all of the Pokemon and completed the game you are practically a sad little man running around playing dress-ups in a ranger outfit. This game is pretty much an "enjoy it while it lasts" game. The lastability is pretty much the only flaw this game has. When I go to turn on my DS and play this game (seeing as I have completed it already) I am bored stiff. Sure there is the fun "special missions" after the game where you cath the ledgendary Pokemon but you don't get to keep them in your party!

Overall

Overall this is a great game that you cannot enjoy for long but while it progresses it is a great and fun game where you thwart the evil Pokemon villans plans of using Pokemon as tools for evil. There is a whole bunch of new features that have been squeezed into up to the brim of a 2 centimetre Ds game pak. Nintendo have taken a shot at making a 3D Pokemon game on a handheld device and they succeded! The new music is great and the new sounds are pretty and fun. The graphics are nice for a handheld but they could try defining their sprites a bit (for those who do not know what sprites are, they are the pictures and objects that are placed in the game in which you interact with.) Nintendo have not only captured a new Pokemon game but they have captured a whole new twist in Pokemon history.
