Question for LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

Does anyone know what the "codes" are for when building your own character in LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean on PS3? It seems that there are very limited choices with this LEGO game for building your own character and I wondered if the "code" section has something to do with it? I've created a character, named it, but I just can't figure out what the "code" area is for? Also, I saw someone mention being able to put mermaid items on a character - why can't I seem to find those options when I'm creating a character. If it helps, I am done with the game, I just like to go back and play with custom characters. Thanks for any help someone can give me on this!

The codes for customiseable characters represent what that character looks like. For instance, BDCBGABD could mean he has a sword, ragetti's face, blonde hair, a hat, a white belt, dark skin and blue trousers. When you change a certain feature, the code changes.
