I. Plot Summary: Virtuous Mission
===============================================================================
"After the end of World War II, the world was split into two-- East and West.
That marked the beginning of the era called the Cold War."

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
1.1 Prolouge
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The game takes place in the year 1964. As the game opens, Major Zero and Jack
are talking in an office. Zero tells Jack that the CIA has approved their FOX
unit's Virtuous Mission. FOX will become official if the mission succeeds.
Zero explains the details for a questioning Jack.

Two years ago a Soviet scientist named Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov asked for
asylum in America by speaking with an American spy. Sokolov was a weapons
expert who worked in a weapons facility. Sokolov helped develop the multi-
engine cluster used in the Soviets' first manned rocket space flight. After
working in the weapons facility, Sokolov realized the power of the weapons was
getting out of hand and wanted to defect. Sokolov's family was taken out of
the country first, and Sokolov followed shortly after. Zero was able to get
Sokolov over the Berlin Wall, but the Sokolov was in a bad state from the
journey and had to be taken to a hospital in West Berlin. During his stay,
the Cuban Missle Crisis was happening in the U.S. Soviet nuclear weapons were
placed in Cuba and America demmanded they be removed. The Soviets refused, and
the world was put on the edge of a possible nuclear attack. To avoid a nuclear
war, President John F. Kenedy had to make a deal with the Soviet Union to get
them to remove the missiles. As a cover story, the American government led
people to believe that America's part of the deal involved removing American
nukes from Turkey. America's real part of the bargain was to give Sokolov back
to the Soviet Union. Sokolov was forced to continue working on one of his
weapons for the Soviets.

According to recent intelligence, Sokolov is near completion of the nuclear
weapon and conducting tests in the Virgin Cliffs located in the Soviet Union.
Testing is the only chance they have of rescuing Sokolov.

1.2 Virtuous Mission
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
A couple days later the mission commences. Jack makes a stealthy entrance by
performing a HALO (high altitude low opening) jump into the Virgin cliffs.
Zero explains over Jack's radio that after he gets Sokolov, a recovery balloon
will be spent to get them out. Jack uses his radio to communicate with Zero
on the missions. Once Jack lands, Zero tells him they'll have to use code
names for each other. Zero gives Jack the code name Naked Snake (Snake for
short). Zero tells Snake that he must not be seen or heard by the people
guarding Sokolov since he is in enemy territory. Zero warns that Snake's
presence could cause an international incident if he's caught. There is no
backup, it's only Snake conducting the operation. Weapons are procure on
site, all Snake has is a tranquilizer gun, knife, and some medical supplies in
his backpack. Food must be gotten through hunting.

Zero introduces the team on stand-by to give Snake advice over the radio.
There's Para-Medic, a movie loving female doctor to watch over Snake's health,
and The Boss, Snake's old mentor. The Boss was a legendary female soldier in
World War II. She put together a group known as the Cobra Unit which helped
bring an end to the war. The Boss is considered the greatest soldier in
existence. Snake is surprised to hear from her and asks her why she suddenly
left him during his close quarters combat training. She says that she was on a
top-secret mission. Snake wanted her to teach him how to think like a
soldier. The Boss claims that Snake must learn that on his own. She goes
into a long speech about how politics determine who you fight, and that since
politics are always changing today's ally could be tomorrow's enemy. The Boss
isn't with Zero and Para-Medic, but instead in a submarine in the Arctic Ocean.
Zero tells Snake that Sokolov is in an abandoned factory to the north.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
1.3 Colonel Volgin and Ocelot
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake comes across KGB troops with AK-47s to guard Sokolov. Using camouflage
and face paint Snake is able to sneak past them and even find a sniper rifle
in the jungle. Eventually he comes across a bridge over a river far below.
After sniping some soldiers on the bridge Snake crosses it and soon comes to
the factory Sokolov is in. Snake again uses the sniper rifle to snipe the
sentries and enters the factory. When he finds Sokolov, the scientist is
burning his documents and tells Snake he'll never get the weapon. Snake
explains that he is from the CIA and is here to take Sokolov to America.
Sokolov tells Snake that they must hurry because Colonel Volgin of GRU is
coming to get him.

Colonel Volgin is a member of a faction that wants to over through the current
leader of the Soviet Union (Khrushchev). Since the Cuban Missile Crisis,
Khrushchev has been losing power and influence in his country. Volgin's
faction plans to use this opportunity to get rid of Khrushchev and put
Brezhnev and Kosygin in power. Volgin has a weapons facility called the Granin
Design Bureau. Volgin wants to get Sokolov's new weapon to help him in his
quest to topple Khrushchev and gain power.

Upon exiting the factory Snake and Sokolov are surrounded by KGB soldiers.
Just when it looks like there's no way out, a young GRU Major shows up. The
Major is Ocelot, a man working for Colonel Volgin. Ocelot manages to use an
automatic handgun to kill all of the KGB soldiers in an amazingly quick and
accurate succession of shots. Ocelot then meows to signal hidden GRU
operatives which show themselves and surround Snake. Because Ocelot tries
some new fancy technique to cock his gun, the gun jams on him when he tries to
shoot Snake. Snake takes advantage of this opportunity and grabs Ocelot to
use as a human shield. Sokolov takes off in the confusion while Snake uses
close quarters combat (CQC) moves to knock-out all of the GRU agents. Once
Snake has Ocelot at gunpoint he explains why his gun jammed and that Ocelot
would be better at using a revolver since he twists his elbow to absorb the
recoil-- a revolver technique. When Ocelot pulls out a secret knife and tries
to attack him, Snake uses CQC to knock Ocelot out as well.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
1.4 The Boss' Betrayal
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake finds Sokolov back at the bridge he crossed earlier. Sokolov points to
the mountains and Snake is able to see the weapon Sokolov was forced to build--
The Shagohod. It is a tank that can launch nuclear missiles. The weapon is
not yet finished, but if Volgin was to have The Shagohod in its completed
form, he would use it to start World War III. As long as he doesn't have
Sokolov, Volgin won't be able to complete the weapon. As they are crossing
the bridge, The Boss appears with two briefcases. The Boss says that Sokolov
comes with her. A helicopter than comes and the bridge becomes full of
buzzing horrnets. The Fear comes down from the helicopter on a rope and
snatches up Sokolov. On the helicopter are three of the Cobra unit members:
The Pain, The Fear, and The End. It then begins to rain and The Sorrow
appears next to The Boss for a moment then vanishes. Colonel Volgin shows up
and The Boss tells that she is defecting to the Soviet Union and that Sokolov
is a gift for Volgin. Volgin can produce electricity around his hands. Along
with Sokolov, The Boss is also giving Volgin a couple of recoiless nuclear
warheads. She then proceeds to take the gun apart that Snake was pointing at
her. Using CQC, The Boss snaps Snake's arm like a twig. When Volgin tries to
kill Snake, The Boss stops him and insists that she do it. She throws Snake
off the bridge and into the river below. As Snake falls off the bridge he
grabs The Boss' bandana.

Later, Snake washes up on shore and is conntacted by Zero. Para-Medic comes
over the radio and tells Snake how to fix himself up. After sowing up his
cuts and popping his arm into place, Snake sees The Shagohod being lifted away
by helicopters. In one of the helicopters, Volgin meets with a woman who is
supposedly Sokolov's wife. Colonel Volgin then pulls out one of the nukes The
Boss gave him and prepares to fire and the weapons facility Sokolov was just
in. Ocelot tries to stop him from doing so, saying that the people still in
the facility are their countrymen. The Colonel ignores Ocelot's plees and
fires on the base. As Snake sees his escape balloon landing close by him, he
experiences the nuclear blast from Volgin's fired nuke on the weapons facility.

End Virtuous Mission

===============================================================================
II. Plot Summary: Operation Snake Eater
===============================================================================
This time, it's personal.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.1 Prolouge
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
After the Virtuous Mission Snake is taken to a top hospital in the United
States. Major Zero comes to visit and Snake tells him that the American
government has been interigating him and blames him for The Boss' defection.
Zero tells that he is also being blamed for the incident as well. In order
for FOX to continue, they must go on another mission to clear their name.
Zero tells important information he learns from the CIA:

Only yesterday, the 36th President of the United States, President Lyndon B.
Johnson, recieved a phone call from the leader of the Soviet Union, Khrushchev.
Khrushchev tells that one of his "Design Bureaus" has been blown up in a
nuclear explosion. He blames America for the blast because a U.S. military
aircraft was spotted on radar at the time of the explosion-- both a violation
of Soviet airspace and proof that it was America's fault. Johnson points out
The Boss' defection and says that Colonel Volgin was involved in helping her.

Johnson goes on about how The Boss stole two experimental nuclear shells for
Volgin and denies any involment in the affair. Khrushchev got angry and again
questioned why there was a military aircraft when the explosion happened. He
demanded that the American government "prove their innocence" by capturing The
Boss and getting back the remaining nuclear device. When President asks for
some help on capturing The Boss because she is close to Volgin, Khrushchev
says that he couldn't be of much service because his political power was
weakening. He notes that "Colonel Volgin is a member of the Brezhnev faction,"
(a group that wants to overthrough the government) and asks President Johnson
to take him out as well. Khrushchev gives the president only one week to do
all this, lest the military topple him and retaliate against America with a
nuclear attack.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.2 Operation Snake Eater
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake is chosen for the mission because of his skills and the fact that he was
The Boss' last apprentice. Later, Snake finds himself in a military aircraft
high above the area where Virtuous Mission took place. This time, he is
parachuting from a drone. The Russians have agreed to help by providing Snake
with two KGB agents-- ADAM and EVA. The two were NSA code breakers who
defected from the U.S. four years ago. They have managed to penetrate
Volgin's ranks and have inside information to help Snake along the way. ADAM
will help Snake with an escape route and has agreed to rendezvous with him at
the destroyed facility Sokolov was held in. Snake ejects from the drone just
before it crashes and lands safely.

Snake contacts Major Zero, and Zero reminds him of his mission objectives:
rescue Sokolov, find and destroy the Shagohod, and eliminate Volgin and The
Boss. Snake questions having to kill Volgin, as it's not America's problem,
but reluctantly agrees with all of his objectives. Everyone is back to help
Snake over the radio (except The Boss, of course =) ). This includes Para-
Medic-- who will have her medical license taken away if the mission fails; as
well as a new guy, Mr. Sigint-- an expert on cutting edge weapons and
equipment technology. Snake askes how to identify ADAM, and Zero says that
the password question to ask ADAM is "Who are the Patriots?" and that ADAM
should respond with "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" to confirm that it is indeed him. Snake
is equipped with a .45 gun for this mission, since he doesn't have to be so
sneaky since Khrushchev knows about the mission. Even so, the Major warns
Snake to still be cautious and stealthy.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.3 ADAM is EVA?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As Snake plods through the same area he was in for the Virtuous Mission in the
dark night in all black, he hears the winny of a horse. Continuing on, he
does see a white horse all saddled up. When he approaches it, The Boss begins
speaking to him as she walks out of the nearby trees. She rushes at Snake and
before he has time to point his gun and shoot The Boss is already on top of
him knocking him to the ground and taking his gun apart much like the last
time they saw each other. She tells Snake to "Go home," saying that he has no
chance in carrying out his mission sucessfully. When he gets up to attack her
she again shows her CQC skills and throws him to the dirt. She tells him that
she is not his boss anymore-- that America is his new boss.

Taking a machine gun to the crashed drone Snake flew in on, The Boss causes an
explosion to attract guards to their current position. It begins to rain, and
Snake is able to see The Sorrow standing next to The Boss. Before she leaves,
Snake askes her why she chose to defect. She says that she didn't truly
defect, that she is still loyal to her "purpose." She then questions him
about his loyalty: "Loyalty to your country, or loyalty to me? Your country,
or your old mentor? The mission, or your beliefs? Your duty to your unit?
Or your personal feelings?" After getting on her horse, The Boss points out
the bandana Snake is wearing-- the same one he took off her in the Virtuous
Mission. She rationalizes that "if you can't put the past behind you, you
won't survive long." Riding off into the jungle, The Boss cautions Snake that
she'll kill him if they ever meet in the future.

Calling the Major on the radio, Snake explains the situation and suggests
that "there's got to be a leak somewhere." Zero says that it's impossible for
there to be a leak. Major Zero tells Snake to hurry to the factory to meet
ADAM.

Upon arriving at the factory, Snake is approached by woman on a motorcycle.
After she asks if he's the agent from America, Snake askes where ADAM is. She
only says that "ADAM couldn't make it." Unconvinced, he askes her the secret
phrase "Who are the Patriots?" many times, but she doesn't respond. Before he
can get anything out of her, Snake becomes trapped as GRU soldiers come from
behind. Snake hits the floor on the motorcyclist's orders and she is able to
take them all out with a hand gun. Claiming that for her answer to his
question, she takes off her helmet and approaches Snake. She has long blond
hair and is very attractive. Introducing herself as EVA, she unzips her
jump suit to her tummy to reveal her black bra.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.4 Ocelot and his Revolver
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake and EVA go inside the abandoned facility to talk. He askes where ADAM
is, and EVA tells him that it was due to Colonel Volgin's suspicion of ADAM
that he wasn't able to meet Snake. Snake tells EVA how impressed he was with
the technique she used to take down everyone: "You held it sideways, and used
the muzzle jump to create a horizontal sweep." EVA pulls out her gun to mimic
what she was doing earlier and tells Snake that it's a Chinese Type 17 pistol.
She gives Snake a .45 gun and he remarks on how well-made and detailed it is.
She also gives him back the gun that The Boss had taken apart only that night
along with a scientist disguise. EVA reassures Snake that Sokolov is still
alive in a lab and is being forced to continue work on the Shagohod.
Unfortunatly, there's a lot of guards so he'll have to use the scientist
disguise to sneak in. The instructions on how to get to the lab are then
explained:

"head north through the jungle, [pass] a heliport used for shipping materials,
continue north and there will be a large crevice, descend into that area [to]
reach a cave, move through the cave [to] arrive at a mangrove swamp, after the
swamp there'll be a warehouse, [go] through the warehouse [to] come out just
south of the lab."

Snake is able to devise a way to hold his gun steady with one hand and hold
his knife in the other for close range combat. EVA insists that he rest
before heading out while she keeps watch for him. Before he goes to sleep,
Snake calls up Sigint just to have a talk. As Sigint knows all about weapons,
Snake tells him about the gun EVA gave him, EVA's Chinese Type 17 pistol, and
what she did with it earlier. Sigint gives Snake a little history on her gun
and comments that the technique where the muzzle is held sideways is Chinese.
Snake finishes talking with Sigint and goes to sleep.

At dawn Snake wakes up to see EVA getting dressed. He hears a noise and looks
outside to see the Ocelot unit coming. Moving the bed EVA reveals a secret
underground passage out. Looking through some grating they see that Ocelot
himself is with the soldiers. The plan is for EVA to escape on her bike while
Snake will "keep them busy." Snake looks around and finds some thermal
goggles in a locker right before the Ocelot unit bustes down the door. He is
able to take down all seven of the soldiers using his gun. Walking around the
exterior of the building, he sees Ocelot standing on a balcony holding EVA
captive with a knife to her throat.

Luckily, she has her motorcycle helmet on so he can't see her face. Ocelot
has a necklace with the bullet he was going to kill Snake with on it.
Smelling her perfume, Ocelot realizes that the spy who has penetrated Volgin's
ranks is woman. He pulls out a "single action army" revolver and points it at
Snake. Snake makes fun of the revolver and Ocelot tries to shoot him. Again,
nothing happens. In his shock, EVA kicks her foot right into Ocelot's face
and knocks him off the balcony; then jumps onto her bike. As Ocelot gets off
his back, EVA rides her motorcycle right over him. Snake explains that
Ocelot's revolver only carried six shots when he thought it carried eight--
that's why the gun didn't go off. Ocelot runs off in anger, and Snake stops
EVA from shooting him in the back because he's young. Having to get back to
Colonel Volgin before Ocelot does, EVA rides off busting open a gate as she
goes.

Later, in the crocidile and leechfilled lake EVA calls to confirm that she
made it back alright. Snake askes why she wanted to defect from the United
States of America. EVA says that it happened when she began to work for the
NSA. "I saw the universe... I realized that the gravity in this universe was
holding me back... Half of what I'd been told was a complete and utter lie...
the other half was a conveniently constructed lie. [The truth]-- it's hidden
in the lies." EVA gives him her radio frequency so he can keep in touch with
her if need be.

Snake continues and almost is killed by a trap. EVA calls and gives a late
warning about how some areas in the jungle are filled with traps. He then
sneaks past a few guards and electricity fences and procedes to the heliport.
There, Snake sneaks past more KBG guards. When Snake arrives at the large
crevice EVA mentioned, he meets up with Ocelot. Ocelot says that it was The
Boss who told him that Snake would be here. The Ocelot unit comes and
surrounds the area as their commander meows just like in the Virtuous
Mission. Ocelot orders them to stay back so that he and Snake can battle
alone. Ocelot shows off his skills and his two six-shot revolvers. Snake
takes cover behind a large rock and shoots Ocelot as he reveals himself from
cover. Before the winner can be decided, however, a large amount of horrnets
appear. The horrnets swarm everyone, and many of the Ocelot unit is killed by
their posin. Ocelot is able to use his two revolvers by spinning them quickly
to knock all the horrnets away from his face and takes off. Snake jumps into
the large crevice to get away from the horrnets.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.5 The Pain in the Dark
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake explores the cave in which the crevice leads to. He is able to find a
torch so that he can see in the dark. Exploring he finds lots of ammo and
items, even a shotgun! Eventually he comes to a large cavern where The Pain
is waiting for him. The cavern is filled with water and The Pain is on an
island in the middle. He claims that he is one of "the sons of The Boss."
The Pain uses his bees to attack Snake, but Snake takes cover behind a small
island. The Pain even uses his bees to shield him from bullets! Snake
attacks when The Pain lowers his shield, and begins to beat him. When he is
close to defeat, The Pain takes off his ski mask and reveals his face-- it's
mutulated by countless bee stings. He then releases killer bullet bees from
his mouth that fly around trying to sting Snake. Avoiding the bullet bees,
Snake defeats The Pain. The Pain blows up on defeat and all his bees are
killed.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.6 Into the Lab
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Exiting the cave, Snake sees a couple of patrol units on hovering machines
watching the mangrove swamp from above with big search lights. Carefully
moving through the swamp and using his camo, Snake makes it through the swamp
without being seen. When leaving the swamp he can see the warehouse from
across a little lake. He pulls out both his binoculars and his directional
mic to see and hear what's going on. On the docks he sees Sokolov and Volgin
having a conversation.

Sokolov is being watched by a KGB soldier. After refusing to leave with Volgin
to another lab, Sokolov has to watch as Colonel Volgin electrocutes his
supposed wife Tanya with his hands. Volgin picks up Tanya and again
electrocutes her. Just then, Ocelot appears and calls Sokolov a traitor. He
pulls out one revolver and loads it with a single bullet, then pulls out two
more empty revolvers. He begins juggling the three revolvers and says he's
going to pull the trigger of the guns six times in a row. As Ocelot pulls the
triggers Sokolov becomes so scared that he wets his pants. The Boss appears
and stops Ocelot by catching one of the revolvers and firing it. It turns out
this was the gun that had the bullet in it and it goes off, but The Boss was
aiming at somewhere off the docks so no one was hurt. On the colonel's orders,
the guard takes Sokolov away into the warehouse. The Boss tells Ocelot to
"stay in line from now on," and disables his revolver just like she disabled
Snake's guns in the past. Ocelot walks off into the warehouse.

When the colonel askes about Snake, The Boss informs him that Snake has killed
The Pain. Volgin punches through a wall in anger, saying, "He may be a child,
but he's definitely one of yours!" Volgin tells The Boss that Snake must be
eliminated before the final test of the Shagohod. An old man in a wheelchair
comes wheeling out of the warehouse. The Fear uncloakes himself after The
Boss tells him that it's up to him to get Snake. The Fear was the one who
pushed out The End's wheelchair. The Fear takes off running and jumping
across the lake and going into the jungle. When Volgin questions The Boss
about how The End is always sleeping, she tells him that: "The End is saving
what life he has left in him for battle... But he'll wake up when the time is
right." It begins to rain and Volgin walks over to Tanya. He tells her that
she "can entertain me (Volgin) till the rain stops." The Boss askes the
rainstorm if it is The Sorrow's doing. The rain suddenly stops.

Snake waits till The Boss and The End leave the docks, then swims over and
takes out the remaining guards. He sneaks into the warehouse and moving
through it takes out a couple of guards there. When he exits the warehouse
Snake finds himself in a area full of traps and trees. Carefully proceeding
through it, he is able to reach the outer wall of the labs. Snake crawls
under the electric fence and takes out some guards. To get in, he knocks on
the outer wall door and shoots when a guard opens it up. Once within the
outer walls, Snake sneaks past some guards and into the lab building. Here,
Snake puts on his scientist disguise and is able to get by the guards. The
real scientists realize he's not one of them but Snake is able to knock them
out before they can sound the alarm. Exploring the building he eventually
reaches a room with an old man named Aleksandr Leonovitch Granin.

2.7 The Philosophers' Legacy
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Granin tells Snake that Sokolov is not there anymore. Granin has been
drinking and knows Snake is a spy. When Snake askes who he is, he introduces
himself as Granin, "the foremost weapons scientist in the Soviet Union." He
talks about how important he is to his country because of the missles he's
designed for them. Snake askes Ganin why he is drinking, and finds out that
it's because he's depressed. His country has been interested in Sokolov and
his work with the Shagohod and have ignored Granin and all his new weapon
designs. Granin pulls out from his desk his designs for a bipedal tank, "a
kind of metal gear, if you will." This walking tank would be able to launch
nuclear missles. Because he is mad with his country and doesn't want his work
to go to waste, he is going to send his work and reaserch to his friend in the
United States (In a picture, we can see that his friend looks strikingly like
Otacon from the previous games. It's most likely Otagon's father Granin is
reffering to). He wants his weapon to be used against his country to punish
them for building it.

Granin claims that "Sokolov's pathetic Shagohod pales in comparison to [his]
work!" Granin explains that "a tank does not need a rocket!" He points to
his legs to show that a tank needs legs, but Snake is confused and comments
that he has "nice shoes." Unfortunatly for Granin, "the fools in charge chose
Sokolov." He tells that "The Philosophers' Legacy has been handed over to
[Sokolov]. Snake askes him what he's talking about, and Granin explains the
Philosophers' Legacy.

"Volgin's father was in charge of the Philosophers' money laundering
activities. In the confusion of the war, he somehow ended up with their
treasure. And Volgin inherited that treasure illegally. We never need to
worry about the military budget [because] the development costs at our
facility are all paid out of the colonel's deep pockets... The funding for my
research came out of that legacy... Now, my money, my men-- all have been
diverted to the Shagohod project."

The final test for the Shagohod will be tomorrow, Granin explains. Sokolov
has been taken to "Volgin's main base, the great fortress of Groznyi Grad."
That's also where the Shagohod is located. Granin agrees to tell Snake how
inside Groznyi Grad because he wants the Shagohod destroyed. He tells
that "there is an underground tunnel that runs around the perimeter of the
fortress." This can be used to get into the base. The tunnel enterance is in
the mountains. To get there, Snake must backtrack to the warehouse he passed
earlier and go through a door there that will lead into the jungle and then
the mountains. Granin gives him a key to open the door. It is dawn when
Snake leaves Granin's office.

2.8 The Fear and The End
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake exits the lab the same way he came in, again using his scientist
disguise to get out. He crawls back under the electric fence and walks into
the area filled with trees and traps. Out of nowhere an arrow comes and hits
him in the leg. He immediatly takes cover behind a tree. He peeks out and
sees tree branches moving as a cloaked creature jumps from tree branch to tree
branch. The Fear uncloaks himself and jumps down to where Snake is standing.

After giving his Cobra name, The Fear tells Snake that the arrow in his leg is
coated with the venom of the Brazilian Wandering Spider that will soon kill
him. The Fear has the chance to kill Snake right there and then with his
crossbow, but he doesn't find that a fitting death and instead wishes to
battle Snake. The Fear dislocates both his arms and scurries up the nearest
tree as though immitating a spider.

As the battle begins, Para-Medic calls Snake on the radio and tells him how to
heal the posin arrow shot. He must take a serum injection to "neutralize the
posin" and treat the bolt wound. After Snake heals himself, he begins the
hunt for The Fear. Like a monkey, The Fear jumps from tree to tree taking
shots at Snake with his crossbow. Though the task seems daunting at first
because of The Fear's cloaking device, Snake soon thinks things through and
puts on his thermal goggles. With these on, Snake easily spots The Fear and
has no trouble in bringing him down. When he's defeated, The Fear explodes
just like The Pain did, except this time arrows come out of the explosion and
nearly hit Snake. Snake again uses a tree for as a shield from the arrows.

Returning to the warehouse, Snake uses the key on the door Granin told him
about and reaches another jungle area. EVA gives him call over the radio and
says that she's in Groznyi Grad and that Sokolov is there as well. She urges
him to come quickly because the tests are done and the final preparations are
almost complete. Once this happens, Volgin will kill Sokolov. Snake mentions
the underground tunnel that Granin told him about, but EVA says that another
key different from the one he has is needed to enter the tunnel. She gets an
idea and tells him to meet her at the top of the mountains. She warns Snake
that a sniper known as The End is waiting in the jungle for him just before
the mountains.

Snake continues until he reaches the spot where The End should be. The End's
parret sees Snake and returns to The End to wake him for battle. Snake hears
The End speaking, but cannot see him. The End askes nature for help in the
upcoming battle with Snake. Snake calls up EVA and she tells him how to kill
The End. Snake must search the different sniping points around the area until
he finds The End. Snake carefully uses his camo and sneaks to the different
spots looking for The End. Once Snake finds The End he sneaks up on him and
kills him with a bullets to the head. Thanking the spirits of the forest The
End dies with an explosion as all the other Cobras have.

2.9 Up the Mountain
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
After seeing the destruction of The End, Snake continues through the jungle
until he reaches a tunnel that leads into the mountain. In the tunnel is an
extremely long ladder that he climbs to get near the top of the mountain.
Snake goes up the rest of mountain on foot, taking out patrol guards and
avoiding a patrol helicopter as he goes. Along the way Snake finds many sheds
containing ammo, rations, and even an RPG-7 (rocket propelled grenade
launcher). At the summit, Snake locates the ruins buildings EVA mentioned
earlier and goes inside to find EVA getting dressed.

EVA kicks a pair of dirty boots out of the way and goes to talk to Snake.
Snake askes where all the cuts on EVA's back came from. She tells that they
are the colonel's doing-- not because Volgin found out she was the spy, it's
just that "he gets pleasure out of making people suffer." She informs him
that he must hurry because there is going to be a Phase 2 trial for the
Shagohod and that Khrushchev soldiers are planning on attacking the base. She
gives him the key to unlock the underground tunnel to get into Groznyi Grad.
EVA gives him instant noddles and a pair of night vision goggles. Snake askes
her where Sokolov is at in the fortress of Groznyi Grad.

She tells Snake that: "He's in the heart of the fortress, the weapons lab.
The weapons lab is divided into three wings. There's the east wing which
houses the reasearch facilities. Then there's the main wing, where the
weapons are assembled; that's where the Shagohod is. Finally there's the west
wing which is connected via a passageway to the main building; that's where
Sokolov is." Snake must enter from the east wing and make his way to through
the building to the west wing to get to Sokolov. Unfortunatly, you must be a
colonel to get into the west wing. EVA shows a picture to Snake of a colonel
(Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov) standing next to Volgin and wants him to pretend to
be him to sneak in. She tells him to steal Raikov's clothes. Snake remembers
that he wore a mask that looks just like Raikov in the Virtuous Mission and
that he still has it with him to use when he aquires Raikov's clothes. Snake
is to look for him in the east wing.

Snake askes about how to escape after rescuing Sokolov. EVA tells him about a
lake 30 miles north of the fortress where she has hidden some type of flying
vehicle to use for escape. She says that she can piolet it for them. EVA
askes about Snakes feelings for The Boss. He says that "for ten years we
lived and died together. You couldn't possibly understand." She questions
whether he can kill The Boss or not because of his feelings. After that EVA
askes of Snake's feelings for her and begins to kiss him. Suddenly they hear
a noise and go outside to see what it was. EVA tells Snake that she must
return to the fortress to continue to spy on Volgin. When Snake askes how
it's going with the spying business, she tells him that the colonel knows
there's a spy in his ranks-- Snake couldn't have made it so far without any
inside help. EVA then takes off on her bike.

Snake uses his binoculars to scope out Groznyi Grad and sees Colonel Volgin
punching a barrel with his electric hands. When Volgin knocks the barrel into
the air, Granin (the guy who gave Snake the first key and had designed Metal
Gear) flys out of it, dead. Ocelot comes up and askes the colonel if he was
able to get Granin to talk. Volgin tell Ocelot that he didn't say anything
before he died leading Ocelot to believe that Granin was not the spy that has
infiltrated Volgin's ranks. They find a tracking device on Granin's body when
examining it and discuss the possibility that the real spy was using Granin
somehow. Ocelot is angry that the colonel killed one of their comrades when
he wasn't the even the spy. Ocelot begins to think out loud if the colonel is
just paranoid and that there is no spy. Volgin stresses that there is in fact
one because the C3 explosives have been stolen and that it couldn't have been
Snake because he couldn't have gotten to the fortress yet.

The Boss enters along with Tanya. She tells them all that both The Fear and
The End have been killed by Snake. This leaves only one more living member of
the Cobras besides The Boss, and that is The Fury. The Boss tells Volgin that
American is trying to take The Philosophers' Legacy from him. After Volgin
and The Boss leave, Ocelot smells that Tanya is whering perfume. He also
notices her dirty boots.

2.10 The Flames of The Fury
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
After watching Ocelot and Tanya walk off, Snake returns to the door in the
mountains that leads to the underground tunnel and uses the key EVA gave him
to open it. Snake goes through the tunnel until he comes to a maze of criss-
crossing coridors. It is here that he sees The Fury using his flame-thrower.
The Fury is wearing a space suit and has a rocket pack on his back. Before
The Fury is able to get Snake with his flame-thrower, Snake rolls out of the
way and the battle begins. Because of the darkness, Snake uses the NVGs that
EVA gave him to locate The Fury. Snake uses all the different coridors to his
advantage and is able to hide from The Fury while ocasionally getting a shot
in. Eventually Snake shoots him so much that his space suit rips and then
Snake finishes him off. The Fury dies in a great explosion of flames which
causes the tunnel to cave in, but luckily Snake exits the tunnel before this
happens. As Snake looks around, he realizes he has made it into the outside
walls of Groznyi Grad.

2.11 The Great Fortress
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake procedes very carefully because of all the security surrounding Groznyi
Grad. Slowly he makes his way towards the east wing of the building and
eventually is able to reach it without raising any alarms. In the east wing,
Snake sneaks around until he finds Raikov in the bathroom. Snake knocks
Raikov out and drags him into a locker room. Here, Snake steals Raikov's
clothes, stuffs him in a locker, and finally puts on the mask that looks just
like Raikov. With the uniform, Snake is able to go into the west wing being
guarded at the enterance. From here Snake finds the room Sokolov is in.
Before going in, Snake peeks through a window in the door of the room and sees
Sokolov hand something to Tanya. She asks Sokolov about The Philosophers'
Legacy but he denies knowing anything about it. After she leaves the room
Snake enters and takes off his mask.

Sokolov recognizes Snake from the Virtuous Mission and tells him that Phase 2
of the Shagohod is complete. Snake asks him what Phase 2 was and Sokolov
explains the need of the phase. Phase 2 was designed because the Shagohod
couldn't carry and launch nuclear missles correctly because they were too big
and wouldn't have enough range to strike the United States if launched from
the Shagohod. To fix this problem rocket boosters where attached to the
Shagohod and used to accelerate it to over 300 miles per hour. From this
speed, the Shagohod launches the nuclear missiles which increases the range of
the missiles from 2500 miles to 6000 miles: enough to target any part of the
United States. With the Shagohod, there is no need for missile silos. All
that is needed is a runway or something similar 3 miles in length to launch a
nuclear missile. The Shagohod can't be detected by America and can launch at
almost any time.

Sokolov tells Snake that there is only one Shagohod built, but Volgin is
planning on mass-producing it based on that one. The only one in existence is
located in Groznyi Grad. Volgin wants to build more not only for the Soviet
Union, but also for all of the Soviet Union's allies. He would use the weapon
to start a revolution in all of the third world countries as well. There
would no longer be deterrence between America and the Soviet Union, because
the Soviet Union would no longer see the U.S. as a threat. The Cold War would
end and the world would be destroyed. Snake explains that their only chance
is to destroy the current Shagohod so that Volgin wouldn't be able to use it
as a prototype to build more. Sokolov tells Snake that if a tank used to
store the rocket fuel can be blown up then all of Groznyi Grad would be taken
out as well. He mentions that C3 (a type of plastic explosive) would be
perfect for the task, but that it was stolen from Groznyi Grad's armory
recently by a female spy. He says that she had just visited him.

When Snake calls her EVA, Sokolov tells him that her name is really Tatyana
(Tanya for short). He says that: "She made her way in here by becoming
Volgin's lover." Snake mentions that he thought she was Sokolov's wife, but
Sokolov reminds him that his wife and child are safely in the U.S. Tatyana
came to Groznyi Grad just days before the Virtuous Mission took place.
Supposedly she is spying for Khrushchev. Sokolov tells Snake that just before
Snake entered he gave Tatyana all of the data for the Shagohod. Before they
can escape, they hear Volgin coming. Snake quickly puts back on the Raikov
mask before Volgin enters the room.

Volgin questions why Raikov is there, and then grabs Snake's crotch.
Apparently, Volgin is able to tell that it is not Raikov from the crotch
grabbing and demands to know who the imposter is. He points a gun at Snake,
but instead of shooting him he turns the gun on Sokolov and shoots out his
knee caps. When Volgin turns the gun back on Snake, he grabs and is able to
take it from Volgin. As soon as Snake has the colonel at gunpoint, however,
The Boss enters the room and uses CQC on Snake. She gets him in a headlock
and removes the mask he was wearing. Volgin tries to get up and shoot Snake
but The Boss knocks the gun from his hand. When Volgin asks if it was Judo
The Boss used on Snake, she explains that it's close-quarters combat that she
and Snake developed together. With hands encased in electricity, Volgin beats
Snake to a bloody pulp.

2.12 Snake's Eye
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake has a bag put over his head and is taken to the torture room where he is
hung up by his arms so that he can't escape. In the darkness he hears the
colonel intarigating and beating Sokolov in the room while Tatyana (EVA as
Snake knows her) tries to stop Volgin from hurting him. Volgin knows Sokolov
has given the data of the Shagohod to someone, but he doesn't know who. Soon
Volgin leaves Sokolov for dead and comes to question Snake.

As Colonel Volgin questions Snake, he beats him with his fists. Volgin asks
what Snake is after: "Is it the Shagohod? Or Sokolov!? Or maybe it's the
Legacy!?" Volgin asks who the spy is as well. Even after all the pain Snake
recieves, he still refuses to talk. The colonel then decideds to use his
electrical powers to send an electrical charge through Snake's body (much like
the Emperor does to Luke in Star Wars). Volgin believes that the CIA is after
the Philosophers' Legacy that Volgin controls. The Boss enters the torture
room along with Tatyana. Along with Volgin Ocelot was also already in the
torture room. She tells Volgin that Snake will not talk, because when he was
her apprentice she taught him not to break.

Volgin still believes that Snake was after the Philosophers' Legacy and
reveals what it is. The Legacy is "the secret fund established by the three
Great Powers during the two World Wars!... One hundred billion dollars,
divided up and hidden all over the world!" Vogin tells Snake that he cannot
get it because it's now in an underground vault of Groznyi Grad.

Volgin finds a transmiter on Snake and asks who put it on him. After Ocelot
denies it The Boss steps up for placing the tracking device on Snake. She
used it to know where he was so that "the Cobras could ambush him." Volgin
doesn't believe her and says that "if [the Cobras] knew where he was going to
be, they wouldn't have gotten themselves slaughtered." To prove that The Boss
is in fact loyal to Volgin and hasn't really been "in collusion" with Snake
the whole time, the colonel asks her to cut out Snake's eyes. The Boss pulls
off the bag over Snake's head, and slowly brings the blade of a knife less
than an inch away from one of his eyes.

Before she can do anything to Snake, however, Tatyana runs up and stops The
Boss. Ocelot jumps in and accuses Tatyana of being the spy after smelling her
perfume. She denies being the spy, so Ocelot decides to test her. Just as
with Sokolov, Ocelot begins to juggle three revolvers with one bullet among
the three. Snake watches carefully and when the revolver that has the bullet
in it goes up he swings to knock Ocelot as he catches the revolver to mess up
his aim. As Ocelot falls he fires the gun instinctivly. The revolver was
pointed in Snake's direction, and the bullet grazes his right eye. Blood from
Snake's eye socket comes squirting out all over the floor.

Satisfied, the colonel leaves the room. Ocelot stabs something into Snake's
back, then leaves as well. The Boss pulls out a revolver of her own and
shoots Snake in the leg with it. She then places the empty revolver into the
back of Snake's belt. She tells him to "run." Finally alone with Snake,
Tatyana wispers to him that she was an escape route planned out for him. She
tells him how to find a manhole within the outside walls of Groznyi Grad.
Down the manhole in the sewers is an unlocked door which leads outside the
fortress. She's also managed to get his equipment for him which she can give
back after he escapes. Snake realizes Tatyana is EVA in disguise. Because of
the guards watching over his cell, she can't help Snake break out of his
cell. Two guards then take Snake to his prison cell.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.13 The Great Escape
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
In his cell, Snake contemplates how to escape. He soon remembers his fake
death pill that he was given before the mission began. After taking it, he
falls to the floor as though dead. The current guard on duty thinks Snake
dead and enters his cell. Snake then takes the revival pill that was placed
in his tooth to recover from his current state and attacks the guard. After
knocking out the guard, Snake heads for the outside. There, he finds a small
tunnel that goes under the outside of the fortress which he crawls through to
reach the manhole. He then climbs down to reach the sewers.

Upon reaching the sewers, Snake gets a call on his radio from EVA. She
informs him that Volgin found out he escaped and has locked down the entire
fortress-- including the door Snake was planning on using to get out of the
sewers. The colonel also is about to send some soldiers down into the sewers
to search for Snake. So, instead of taking the exit, EVA tells Snake he must
get out by heading north. As Snake proceeds, he runs into some guard dogs but
is able to take them out and reach the northern exit.

Unfortunatly for Snake, the northern exit leads to a dead end with a great
drop into a river (a lot like the place where Harrison Ford jumps off the dam
in The Fugitive). Several soldiers who were on his tail corner him there.
Along with them is Ocelot. Ocelot takes the bullet he put on a necklace on
places it into a revolver of his and spins it as though playing Russian
Rollet. When he fires the gun at Snake it doesn't go off and Snake uses the
opportunity to jump into the river far below him (again, much like how
Harrison Ford jumps off the dam to escape the cops in The Fugitive).

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.14 The Sorrow's River
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake begins to wade through the water, and soon the trees growing on either
side of the river blaze on fire for no apparent reason. The fires are put out
by a sudden rainstorm and that's when it happens: The Sorrow rises up from the
river directly in front of Snake. The Sorrow tells Snake that they are
surrounded by: "a host of sorrows, and [Snake] is one of them... This world is
one of sadness. Battle brings death. Death brings sorrow... Now you will
know the sorrow of those whose lives you have ended." The Sorrow then cries
blood and begins to hover over the river. As he floats there Snake realizes
that The Sorrow is a ghost.

Snake tries to kill The Sorrow, but bullets and weapons have no effect on
him. The Sorrow floats just above the river as he begins to move downstream.
Snake follows him down the river. As he follows, Snake sees the ghosts of all
those he has killed on his two recent missions. The ghosts reach out to him,
but Snake avoids the spirits of the dead and continues to follow The Sorrow.
Soon Snake sees the ghosts of all the Cobra members he has killed. After a
long while The Sorrow stops moving and Snake looks below the floating Cobra to
see the skeleton of The Sorrow himself. The ghost of The Sorrow tells Snake
to touch the skeleton his old body. When Snake does this he goes into a fake
death. To wake up, Snake takes a revival pill that was placed in his tooth.

Snake wakes up and finds himself drowning in the river he had jumped into. He
surfaces for air. After swimming for shore he uses the radio to contact Major
Zero. Snake asks what happens and the major tells him that he was almost
drowned in the river. Snake considers that all that just happened with The
Sorrow was really a near-death experience. He asks the major about The
Sorrow. Zero tells him that The Sorrow had ESP and could talk with the dead.
When Snake asks him about the relationship The Sorrow had with The Boss, they
call up Sigint to tell them more. Sigint tells them that The Sorrow has been
dead for two years. The Boss killed him on the same bridge on which she
tossed Snake off of. Snake looks up to find that he can see the bridge he was
thrown off of high above him. After World War II all the Cobras broke up and
The Sorrow went over to the Soviet Union. The Boss was sent on a mission by
the CIA to kill him.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.15 The Cave Under the Waterfall
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
After talking with Sigint, EVA calls Snake up to ask how he is. He explains
about jumping into the river to escape the sewers and how he almost drowned.
EVA knows that the river leads to a waterfall and that there is a hidden cave
behind it. She tells Snake to meet her there. After the call Snake carefully
avoids the guards watching over the river and makes it upstream to the
waterfall EVA was talking about.

In the cave Snake hears shooting outside and turns to look at the waterfall.
A motorcycle breaks through the falling water and EVA hops off of it to
introduce herself to Snake as Tatyana. She gives him back his equipment.

EVA goes to dry off while Snake dawns an eye patch and builds a small campfire
to roast some snakes he caught. As he munches on one, EVA returns in a black
bikini. Snake offers her some snake, but she doesn't like them and refuses
the meal. She tells him that he'll have to treat her to a real diner after
the mission's over. EVA wants to try this new popular food called sushi.

As they talk by the fire, a butterfly flutters its wings just in front of
Snake. He tries to catch it, but with only one eye he has no depth perception
and he can't get it. It's only then that it hits Snake: he has lost one eye
and he'll never get it back. His sight will never be as good as it once was.
Seeing the sadness in him, EVA gives him a hug to comfort him and thanks Snake
for protecting her back in the torture room. She tells him that, "I'll be
your eyes from now on." They begin to make out but Snake stops EVA. He tells
her that, "I've got one good eye, and can still fire a gun." When EVA looks
at Snake's back, she sees that something is jammed into it. She pulls out a
transmiter used to track Snake's location and destroy's it in the fire.

Later, they put out the fire. EVA puts on her KGB uniform and changes her
hair style to disguise herself as Tatyana. Snake asks her if she did in fact
steal the C3 as Sokolov had said she did. She pulls out a block of the
explosive. EVA breaks Snake off half, and keeps half for herself. She is
going to use her half to blow up a bridge so the enemy can't follow them after
their escape.

There are four liquid fuel tanks that Snake needs to set C3 on, located in the
hanger where the Shagohod itself is stored. Guards are in the hanger, so
Snake will have to be careful not to alert them to his presence. The C3
charges are all set to a 20 minute timer.

Snake asks EVA about the data on the Shagohod Sokolov gave to her. It was
part of her mission to recover the data for Khrushchev. EVA tells him that
there is a latter in the back of the cave which leads into the outer walls of
Groznyi Grad. Giving him a key, EVA tells Snake how to reach the hanger.
Before leaving, she takes a picture of Snake with a small camera placed in one
of the buttons on her uniform. The picture is for "insurance. To make sure
[Snake] doesn't double cross [her]."

2.16 C3
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Climbing the latter at the end of the cave, Snake proceeds cautiously towards
the hanger where the Shagohod is stored. Before entering, he gets a call on
his radio from Major Zero. Snake lets him know about EVA having the data for
the Shagohod. Zero thinks that Khrushchev would never use the tank should he
build it with the data, so it's not a problem that she has it. Sigint comes
on to explain how to use the C3. After the call, he uses the key to enter the
hanger and takes out all the guards roaming about. With that done, he begins
to place the C3 on the four liquid fuel tanks. Upon placing a charge on the
second fuel tank, EVA calls him up to say that she's got hers set up on the
bridge. She'll be waiting for him there (sheesh guys, just let Snake do his
job and stop calling him like school girls =) ).

Snake goes around the hanger until he finds himself placing the final charge
and setting the timer for 20 minutes. Snake turns to leave the hanger but
sees Colonel Volgin and Ocelot. EVA is lying on the floor next to them. As
he approaches them with his gun The Boss comes out of nowhere and uses CQC to
take it away from him. As always, The Boss uses CQC to beat up on Snake-- it
wouldn't be a true Boss greeting if she didn't.

2.17 More on the Philosophers' Legacy
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake is held at gunpoint by Ocelot. The colonel explains how they caught
EVA. It was the smell of gasoline that gave her away. They realized she must
have been riding the motorcycle to meet with Snake. When searching her room
they found the radio she had used to keep in contact with Snake. They then
found her sneaking around the underground vault and captured her. EVA had the
Philosophers' Legacy microfilm on her when captured. The microfilm contains
the record of where all the money of the Philosophers' Legacy is hidden.
Volgin approaches EVA, kicking her while she's down. EVA tries to attack him
with her lipstick tube, but Volgin stops her with electricity.

When Snake asks what the Philosophers' Legacy is, Volgin decides he will tell
Snake before he kills him (hey, you're not a James Bond villian Volgin!).
Vogin explains the history of the Legacy. "During the last Great War, the
most powerful men in America, China, and the Soviet Union had a secret pact.
The pact was a blueprint for defeating the Axis Powers and creating a new
world order. To secure victory in the war, the three countries pooled their
resources to conduct the most covert types of operations and research... They
amassed an enormous sum of money to fund these projects... That wealth is the
Philosophers' Legacy. After the war was won, the three countries were to
divide the Philosophers' Legacy amongst themselves."

However, the Soviet Union got greedy and wanted the Legacy for themselves.
Vogin's father was "one of the men in charge of managing the Philosophers'
Legacy." After the war, Volgin's father stole the money for the Soviet
Union. "The money was divided up and laundered through banks all over the
world... [The] microfilm contains a record of all of those transactions."
Volgin was able to find the microfilm after his father's death. With the
money he built Groznyi Grad and the facility for Granin to conduct weapons
research. Because Volgin didn't like Granin's ideas, he turned to Sokolov and
the Shagohod. Volgin then used "the spy network established by the secret
pact... to contact The Boss and [suggest] that she defect." She decided to
defect because she realized the problem was the Philosophers. They planned to
use their Legacy to fix the problem the Philosophers caused.

The colonel gives the microfilm to The Boss for safekeeping. The Boss informs
Volgin that Snake must have come back to plant the C3 to destroy the
Shagohod. The Boss tells Volgin that she'll kill EVA and takes her away.
Ocelot wants to fight Snake, but Volgin tells him to sit on the sidelines.
The colonel takes off his coat to reveal the special suit which allows him to
produce the electricity from his body.

When the battle begins, Snake tries to shoot Volgin but all his bullets are
blocked by the colonel's electric force field. Colonel Volgin uses his suit
to fire electricity bolts at Snake. Just when the battle seems lost, Snake
turns the tide by figuring out that he can attack the colonel from the back
without worry of the force field. After Snake doing so many times, Volgin
becomes weak and orders Ocelot to shoot and kill Snake. Ocelot refuses to
comply with the order on the grounds that he made some kind of secret promise
with The Boss. Volgin doesn't take Ocelot's disobidience very well, and tries
to electrocute him. Ocelot uses his revolver to fire shots at the oncoming
electricity. The bullets are able to block the bolt and the bolt blocks the
bullets from hitting Volgin.

Ocelot says to, "fight like a man, Volgin." The colonel is offended and
angered at Ocelot not calling him by his proper title. However, his thoughts
are directed to another matter when an emergency call comes over the
announcement speaker: explosives have found, and everyone is to evacuate the
building as fast as possible. The colonel demands Ocelot find the bombs.
After Ocelot takes off, Colonel Volgin continues the fight with Snake. Using
the same tactics as before, Snake is able to bring Volgin to his knees. Snake
realizes the bomb is about to go off so he makes a run for it while Volgin is
on the floor.

2.18 The Motorcycle Ride
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As soon as Snake is out the doors, EVA pulls up on a motorcycle with a side
car. Snake jumps into the side car and they take off just in time. Behind
them they see the building alight with flames. EVA explains that The Boss let
her go. She doesn't have time to explain why she was let go, but she does
tell Snake that The Boss is waiting for him at the lake they are fleeing to.
She doesn't want him to fight The Boss, but knows that he has to.

In a stunning turn of events, Snake and EVA turn towards the hanger when they
hear a noise and see the Shagohod come out. Apparently, the explosion had no
effect on the weapon. Volgin was able to take cover in the Shagohod and is
the one who's opporating it. Snake and EVA put the petal to the metal and
leave Groznyi Grad. As they leave, Ocelot hops on a motorcycle of his own and
tries to run them off the road. Just like in the movies, while Ocelot's busy
with Snake and EVA, he doesn't realize that his motorcycle is about to head up
a ramp with wrekage blocking the way. When he does realize what's going on he
stops his bike but a huge beam is about to fall and crush him. Snake sees
this and saves Ocelot's life by destroying the falling beam with his RPG
launcher. They speed off leaving Ocelot dumbfounded.

Snake and EVA cruise down the road with the Shagohod behind them. Volgin
activates the rocket boosters on the tank in order to speed up and catch
them. On the bike they are able to weave around to avoid the tank from
running them over. They reach the bridge on which EVA has planted C3 on and
cross over it. EVA stops and they wait on this side for the Shagohod to cross
the bridge. While the tank is crossing, EVA tells Snake to use his sniper
rifle to shoot the C3 on the bridge to destroy it and the Shagohod which is on
it as well. The plan seems to work as the Shagohod falls into the canyon
under the bridge. However, the thing practically jumps out of the canyon and
is ready for more (they should have called it the Phoenix instead of the
Shagohod).

On open dirt grounds, Snake and EVA face off against the Shagohod. Snake uses
the RPG launcher to first disable the tanks movements by shooting at the
trends of the machine, and then to fire at it's weak point-- the backside.
After Snake does this a number of times, Volgin comes out of the interior and
begins controlling the tank from the top of it. EVA tells Snake that he
should hop off and she'll use herself for bait while he takes out Volgin.
While Volgin is worrying about EVA Snake stops him in his tracks by using the
RPG launcher on the tank's trends. He then switches to his sniper rifle and
uses it to hurt Volgin. It begins to rain and when Volgin tries to use his
electricity suit he is struck by lightning. His suit malfunctions and goes
off like fire works, burning him to death.

Before they can celebrate, Snake and EVA see soldiers on motorcycles coming
their way and have to take off. They escape the soldiers on bikes, but EVA
crashes their bike into a log because she's distracted by the fuel tank
leaking gas. Snake only gets a few cuts and scrapes, but finds that EVA's
side is punctured by a sharp piece of wood from a log. Snake tells her that
they have to go, but she says she won't make it and wants him to go on without
her. He tells her he can't do that. "I need you," he tells her. She is
stunned that he would ever say this, and agrees to go along with Snake. Snake
uses the same techniques he used on himself to heal EVA, but she is still very
weak from her injury. In all the excitment from the chase, EVA lost her weapon
so Snake gives her his revolver he got from The Boss before heading out to the
lake.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.19 The Boss
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As they head for the lake, many KGB troops follow behind them. Snake knows
there are too many to fight, so he and EVA run as fast as they can away from
them. EVA's wound slows her down, and unfortunatly some of the troops are able
to catch up with them. Even though she is wounded, EVA is still able to help
Snake out using the revolver he gave her. Eventually, she and Snake are able
to make it to the lake where the escape airplane is waiting. EVA goes and gets
the plane ready for takeoff, but she knows that Snake must face The Boss. She
asks him to promise that he'll make it out of the fight alive, but Snake can
make no such promise. Snake proceeds to the battle ground: a field of
beautiful white flowers. There, he sees The Boss and asks the ultimate
question of her: why?

The Boss finally begins to explain why she defected. There are two reasons.
The first was because of the Philosophers. At the end of World War II, the
Philosophers: "began to fight amongst themselves, and the world was torn
apart." She explains how politics determine a soldiers enemy, and because of
this "yesterday's ally becomes today's opposition." She hates to see it like
this, but that's the way it is. "[Countries] enemies change along with the
times, the flow of ages; and we soldiers are forced to play along." If the
Philosophers can stop their fighting, the world will be made whole again and
at peace. That is The Boss' true mission. The second was because the
American government betrayed her countless times. She goes on to reaccount
some of those times.

The Boss begins to remember the Cobra unit. She couldn't have children of her
own, but thought of the Cobras as family. She worked in the Nevada desert on
atomic testing a few years back and was exposed to the radiation, that is why
she can't get have a baby. Snake too was an "atomic test subject," which was
why she was drawn to him in the first place.

Years later, as the Soviets were quickly advancing their space program, the
American government wanted to catch up to them by any means necessary. The
U.S. finally decided to send a human into space, even though they couldn't
protect the human from the radiation of space. They chose The Boss, since she
had already been exposed to radiation earlier. While in space, she realized
that the space program was just used for another meaningless competition with
the Soviets. What The Boss wants is for everyone to realize they share the
same earth, that people of all countries should be united.

During a mission to Cuba in which she was supposed to help Cuban exiles, the
American government betrayed her and the exiles by not giving air support.
She had to watch while the defenseless exiles were killed by the Cuban
government because the government refused to provide help on the mission they
assigned her. After missions like this for her government, she knew her dream
wouldn't be made real if she didn't take action.

The Boss goes into detail about the history of the Philosophers. "Early in
the twentieth century, the true holders of power in the United States, the
Republic of China, and the newly-formed Soviet Union gathered together in a
secret meeting that would later be known as the Wisemen's Committee. The
secret pact they formed there marked the beginning of the Philosophers." When
all of the origanal members died, chaos followed in the new Philosophers. The
new members of the group are able to influence every war on the face of the
planet, but have "no sense of good or evil." War is a domino effect: one war
causes the next, and this happens till the end of time. This is how the
Philosophers like it.

The reason The Boss knows all of this is because her father was a former
member of the Philosophers. That in turn makes her "the last remaining child
of the Philosophers." It was the Philosophers who killed her father. Not
only did they take her father, but they also took a baby she had before
exposed to radiation. The Sorrow was the father. The Boss shows Snake a long
snake-like scar down her stomach to prove that she really did have a baby once.

The Boss thanks Snake for listening, and tells him to battle her. The winner
will inherit the title of Boss, and "will face an existence of endless
battle." The battle begins. Snake knows that they didn't call her The Boss
for nothing, and she proves to be a tuff opponent. She uses stealth to sneak
up on Snake to use CQC and also has the powerful gun called a Patriot.
However, Snake is powerful, and is able to defeat her. When he does, she
gives him the microfilm containing the location of the Philosophers' Legacy.
She also gives him the Patriot. The Boss tells him to kill her, so he shoots
her in the head with her own gun.

2.20 EVA's Betrayal
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Snake returns to the airplane and EVA takes off. As they are flying Ocelot
suddenly comes aboard using a hovercraft that the guards had used. He tosses
Snake's equipment into the lake and they have a fist fight. Ocelot pulls out
his revolver and EVA tosses Snake his. They are both empty, but Snake and
Ocelot agree to one last showdown. Ocelot takes the bullet he's had since the
first time he met Snake off of his necklace and places it in one of the
identical revolvers. He then juggles both guns and mixes them up and asks
Snake to chose one. Before the duel, Ocelot asks for Snake's real name. He
tells Ocelot it's John, and in turn Ocelot tells him his real name: Adamska
(hint hint). They both walk five paces and turn and shoot. Ocelot has
revolver with the bullet in it. When nothing happens to Snake, Ocelot tells
him that it was a blank. Ocelot laughs it up and tells Snake that it was fun,
but he has to go. Snake is about to give back the revolver, but Ocelot lets
him keep it. Adamska then jumps out into the lake.

Just when they think they're home free, jets called MiGs start to come after
Snake and EVA. Luckily, they're called off by Khrushchev just in time. Major
Zero gets on the radio to congradulate Snake on the mission. The first stop
is to be in Alaska, then onto Langley, Virginia to meet the president himself.

In Alaska, Snake and EVA spend the night together. EVA's lipstick which she
uses to kiss him makes Snake fall asleep. In the morning, Snake sees that EVA
gone but she has left her radio. He notices that there is a message left on
the radio and plays it. The voice of EVA comes from the machine (of course).

She apoligizes for lying to him. EVA was never apart of the KGB or NSA,
neither was she sent by Khrushchev, but instead by the People's Republic of
China. Her true mission was to get the Philosophers' Legacy for China. "The
real ADAM never showed up at the meeting place, saving me the trouble of
having to eliminate him." She stole the microfilm from Snake while he was
sleeping, and also got the data to the Shagohod.

EVA is in fact one of the Philosophers. She went to a special school for
Philosophers and there she met The Boss, who was an instuctor there. That is
why she couldn't fool The Boss but was able to fool everyone else. The Boss
didn't kill her when she was supposed to because she wanted to use her as a
messenger to Snake. The Boss wanted Snake to know the truth about her and her
mission. EVA was supposed to kill Snake since he knew of the Legacy, but
didn't because she promised The Boss she wouldn't.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.21 Loyalty to the End
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The truth is that The Boss didn't betray the United States. "The Boss'
defection was a ruse set up by the U.S. government. It was all a big drama
stagged by Washington so they could get their hands on the Philosophers'
Legacy." The Boss was to both steal the Legacy from Volgin and destroy the
Shagohod for the United States. It was going to be a great mission, but
things went sour when "Colonel Volgin fired an American-made nuclear warhead
at Sokolov's research facility." Because Khrushchev demanded they proof from
the American government that it wasn't involved with the affair, the
government had change the mission. "The authorities in Washington knew that
in order to prove its innocence, they'd have to get rid of The Boss... The
public couldn't be allowed to find out about it-- not ever... The Boss
wouldn't be allowed to come back home alive... That was the way the government
wanted it. That was the mission she was given... Her death at your hands, was
a duty she had to fufil... She will go down in official history as a war
criminal. And no one will ever understand her-- that, was her final mission."

So you see, everything The Boss did was for her country. Even when it seemed
like she was betraying the U.S., she was actually carrying out a mission for
it. She was "loyal to the end," even though her country treated her like
dirt. That is what being a true soldier means.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
2.22 Big Boss
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As Snake, dressed in his formal military uniform with his beret, walks the long
hallway to where the president awaits him, he can only think about The Boss.
The sacrifice she made for her country, giving her own life as her last
mission, breaks his heart. But what really hurts is the fact that the country
that she helped at the loss of her own life, the country that betrayed her
after all she had done, would never acknowledge her sacrifice nor thank her
for a job well done. Instead, they would portray her as a villain, someone
who deserved her fate. But no, Snake knew that she of all people didn't
deserve such a death as they had ordered her to have. No, she deserved life,
the life the American government had taken from her. Had he known what her
mission had been, he would never have been able to kill, which is exactly why
she kept it a secret from him.

The Boss was truly deserving of the title of Boss, the title which he today
would receive from the president himself. He was not worthy of such an honor,
nor did he want the award, not this way. But Snake had to get it, he felt as
though it he would be insulting The Boss' memory and her mission if he didn't
accept it.

Walking through two thick wooden doors into the office where he was expected,
Snake sees the familiar faces of Major Zero, Para-Medic, and Sigint. There are
lots of photographers and news reporters in the room along with a few
government officials-- two of whom he recognizes. The two are Lyndon B.
Johnson-- the President of the United States; and Robert McNamara-- Johnson's
Secretary of Defense. As soon as he enters the office, everyone begins to
clap ecstatically for him. Snake walks to where the president is standing and
awaits his award. Johnson takes a medal from the cushion on which it is held
and pins it on Snake's uniform. As he does this, Johnson announces to the
whole room that Snake is "above even The Boss. [Therefore] I hereby award you
the title of Big Boss. You are a true patriot." Snake salutes the president
and shakes his hand. Shaking the hand of the president, Snake thinks he sees
Ocelot over in the window behind the Johnson. "But it couldn't be Ocelot,"
Snake thinks, "he works for the GRU, he can't be in America." Ocelot
dissappears. "Maybe I was only imagining him there," Snake thinks to himself.
He doesn't dwell on this fact and begins thinking of The Boss once more.

*Note: In case you're wondering what the Big Boss medal looks like, I will
describe it to you. It's big and silver. The medal is of a bald eagle with a
snake in its talons on a cross. It's held by a dark blue ribbon with thin red
and white lines on the sides.

As Snake shakes the president's hand, the photographers begin snapping
numerous pictures of the event and everyone again claps for him. With all the
thoughts of The Boss running through his head, Snake is glad the short award
ceremony is over and slowly begins to leave the room. With Snake walking
away, Robert McNamara whispers to another top government official about the
newly-titled Big Boss and the future of the FOX unit. He notes that they
really "could use an infiltration unit like FOX in the army. Someone like
[Snake] to handle [their] top-secret sneaking missions for [them]. A man who
combines the qualities of a soldier and an agent."

Later, Snake finds himself at the cemetery where The Boss was buried. At her
grave, he leaves her gun (the patriot) and a bouquet of white daffodils-- the
same type of flowers growing in the field of their last battle. Snake salutes
her grave and leaves the place.

*Note: The two inscriptions on The Boss' grave read: "In Memory Of A Patriot"
and a little lower "Who Saved The World".

2.23 Secret Telephone Calls
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
After the game's credits roll, there is a secret conversation with Ocelot on
the phone. He tells that he has gotten the Philosophers' Legacy for the
United States. The one EVA has is a fake. The money will be used to revive
the Philosophers. However, he was only able to get half of the Legacy, the
KGB most likely has the other half. Ocelot also got the plans for metal gear
from Granin. No one was able to put together that he was really ADAM and was
working for the CIA all along.

===============================================================================
III. Ending Timeline
===============================================================================
This is the timeline that comes up after you beat the game-- just before the
credits begin to role. This is almost exactly how it appears in the game. It
hints on what's going to happen in the future and lays the groundwork for the
Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid series.

October 15, 1964
Khrushchev is ousted from power.
Brezhnev becomes the First Secretary of the Communist Party, with Kosygin as
Premier.

October 16, 1964
China conducts its first successful nuclear test in the Takla Makan desert.

1965
Sigint joins ARPA.
He takes part in the development of ARPAnet, which would go online in 1969.

1966
The U.S. government conducts a study on emergency medical treatment. The
Department of Transportation lays the groundwork for the creation of the EMT
system.

1968
EVA disappears without a trace in Hanoi.

1970

===============================================================================
IV. Characters
===============================================================================
Captivating and charismatic characters are essential to any Metal Gear Solid
game, and this game provides both. Though the bosses of the game don't have
deep and extensive background stories, they are the type of novel characters
with the great battles we've come to expect from the MGS series. Naked Snake
is a main character you can care for and respect. I would go so far as to say
he's the best Snake yet, but that is debatable. Whether it's Ocelot doing the
infamous hand gesture or The End taking a snooze in the heat of battle, you can
rest assured that you'll come to love the unique characters Snake Eater adds to
the MGS universe.

*Note: I've taken the liberty of marking the character's affiliation: whether
or not they're considered good or bad guys within the story of the game.
However, everything is seen from Snake's perspective. In reality, as The Boss
says, "there's no such thing as an enemy in absolute terms. The enemies we
fight are only enemies in relative terms, constantly changing with the times."
So, it's all on how you look at it. Also, one must keep in mind Snake Eater's
twisting and turning plot-- not everything is as it seems.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
4.1 Snake and EVA (The Good Guys)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Obviously, Snake is the main character of the game (sorry guys, looks like we
don't get to play as Raiden this time around). His leading lady is the lovely
EVA, and they make the perfect duo. Unlike Raiden and Rose, Snake and EVA are
characters who don't give you a reason to hate them.

Naked Snake
-----------
Sex: Male

Quote: I follow the President and the top brass. I'm ready to die for them if
necessary.

Reminds me of: Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake (heh heh)

Physical Description: Tall, brown hair, wears a bandana. He has a short beard,
which adds to his rugged look. He looks just like Solid Snake from Metal Gear
Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. The only difference is that Naked Snake has bright,
blue eyes.

So, why do they call him Naked Snake? Because he goes into a mission with very
little gear, "naked" if you will. Any ways, Naked Snake shows much more
emotion than the other Snakes. He was trained by The Boss years ago; together
they developed the CQC fighting system and also a close relationship. Unlike
the others, this Snake is naive about politics and government officials. He,
along with Major Zero, is trying to get the FOX unit made official. As a CIA
agent, his latest mission was given to him by the top government officials:
eliminate The Boss and destroy the Shagohod.

EVA
---
Sex: Female

Age: 28

Nationality: United States of America

Birthday: 5/15/1936

Birthplace: Meridien, Indiana

Quote: I can fall in love-- if it's part of the mission.

Reminds me of: Meryl

Physical Description: A young, sexy woman with blond hair passing her shoulders
by a few inches. She has green eyes and wears a tan jump suit which is
unzipped to her belly button to reveal her black bra.

EVA is a former NSA code breaker for the United States who defected to the
Soviet Union. After defecting she got a job as a KGB agent. She loves to ride
motorcycles and eat instant noddles. This foxy lady isn't shy around the men.
By infiltrating the Colonel Volgin's ranks, she is able to provide the American
spy by the name of Snake with inside information to help him succeed in
Operation Snake Eater.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
4.2 On the Radio (Those Who Help the Good Guys)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Back in the day (which is when this game is set) they didn't have the Codec, so
instead used a radio. The radio works almost exactly like the Codec. Snake
uses the radio to keep in contact with those helping him with the mission.
Even though they're not with Snake, they're Snake's only backup by offering
advise pertaining to their specialty.

Major Zero
----------
Sex: Male

Age: 55

Nationality: United Kingdom

Birthday: 8/12/1909

Birthplace: Exeter, England

Quote: This fox is still one step ahead of the hounds.

Reminds me of: Roy Campbell

Physical Description: A guy with short, spiky, white hair.

Major Zero is the one issuing orders to Snake during both the Virtuous Mission
and Operation Snake Eater. He hopes to get the FOX unit made official with the
success of these missions. The major loves James Bond movies and is a good
friend of Snake's.

Para-Medic
----------
Sex: Female

Age: 28

Nationality: United States of America

Birthday: 6/22/1936

Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts

Quote: You couldn't ask for a better guardian angel than me, right?

Reminds me of: Rose

Physical Description: A young woman with shoulder-length brown hair.

Para-Medic is the doctor who watches over Snake's physical health on both
missions to save Sokolov. She's always trying to make sure Snake takes the
proper steps in order to heal fully. She's a big fan of monster movies.

Sigint
------
Sex: Male

Age: 24

Nationality: U.S.A.

Birthday: 11/11/1939

Birthplace: Nashville, Tennessee

Quote: I am THE expert on weapons, equipment, and cutting-edge technology.

Reminds me of: nobody

Physical Description: Sigint likes to wear a big military coat and his
baseball cap. He is African-American.

Like his quote suggests, Sigint is the guy to call if you're curious about your
weapons and equipment. He has extensive knowledge in technology and knows a
lot about the Cobra unit.

4.3 The Cobra Unit (The Bad Guys) (In the Order You Battle Them)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The Cobra unit was formed during World War II by The Boss and her soldier
friends. Each of the six members whom made up the Cobras was gifted in a
certain area of battle, some even having supernatural abilities with which to
turn the tide of war. With them combining their powers and specialties, the
Cobras were able to help the Allies win the war. Shortly thereafter, the unit
disbanded. Recently, they have reunited to fight alongside one another once
more. However, this time they are using their knowledge of combat to help the
evil Colonel Volgin and his quest to mass produce the Shagohod to start a third
world war.

The Pain
--------
Sex: Male

Quote: We are the sons of The Boss!

Boss Battle Similar To: nobody

Physical Description: Dressed in all black and wearing a dark yellow flak vest,
this guy looks like a professional terrorist on the job. To top it all off, he
wears a black mask covering his whole head with only one long slot to reveal
his eyes. Under the mask his bald head is covered with hundreds of bee stings.

The Pain is a dear friend of The Boss and a former beekeeper. Using the
knowledge of his past job, he is able to control thousands of bees at a time.
His bees can be deadly to someone if stung enough times. The Pain use his
bee-taming abilities to ambush unsuspecting enemies. He also can call his bees
to himself and have them cover his entire body to make a shield to protect
against incoming projectiles-- including bullets!

The Fear
--------
Sex: Male

Quote: Come into my web. It is time for you to feel the fear!

Boss Battle Similar To: Vamp

Physical Description: This guy has a small body build. His slicked back black
hair has patches of white to either side. He has orange, lizard eyes and a
long, forked, snake-like tongue. He wears an ugly brown camo.

The Fear is an agile man who can swing like a monkey, run like a cheetah, and
crawl like a spider. He was the ability to cloak himself a la Preditor style.
Poison arrows shot from a crossbow are his weapon of choice. The Fear is able
to dislocate his arms in order to mimic the movements of a spider.

The End
-------
Sex: Male

Quote: I've been wandering for more than a century, and now my journey comes to
a close.

Boss Battle Similar To: Sniper Wolf

Physical Description: A heavy-looking, wrinkly old man. He has a white,
nicely-kept beard a couple of inches long. Large liver spots cover his bald
head. He wears black ear muffs to protect his hearing from his sniper rifle.
His camo is a greenish moss color covered in tree leaves. Eyes of green are
able to bulge out an abnormally far distance from his eye sockets-- the better
to see you with.

Known as "the father of modern snipping," this old man is the world's best
sniper alive. Even at over one hundred years old in age, this guy still has a
little bit of quickness in him. The End has photosynthetic powers-- meaning he
can go without food for long periods of time without losing stamina. His body
is able to make it's own food if he is in the sunlight-- just like a plant. He
is one with nature and they say he can even "speak to the forest." Part of the
reason for being such a great sniper comes from his skills at camouflaging
himself. The End is virtually invisible in a grassy environment. Instead of
using lethal bullets, The End uses tranquillizer darts in Mosin Nagant-- his
custom sniper rifle. Even though the old man doesn't need a spotter, his pet
parrot still helps him out by flying over the field of battle and reporting his
opponent's position. Because of his age, The End spends most of his days
sleeping in his wheelchair to conserve what's left of his life. He trusts that
the forest will wake him when it's time to do battle.

The Fury
--------
Sex: Male

Quote: I came back from space. As I returned, I had one vision-- the world set
ablaze.

Boss Battle Similar To: Vulcan Raven

Physical Description: You can't really see The Fury most of the time because
he's wearing a dark astronaut's suit with a glass bubble hiding his head. On
his back are gasoline tanks for his flame-thrower and two small jet-boosters
allowing him to take flight.

The Fury is a former astronaut who saw the blue Earth from a space mission.
Sometime during his trip to space, he went crazy and wanted to see the planet
in flames and chaos. He still wears his space suit and hears mission control
orders in his head. Wielding a flame-thrower, this guy is probably the most
unknown member of the Cobra unit.

The Sorrow
----------
Sex: Male

Quote: Battle brings death. Death brings sorrow.

Boss Battle Similar To: Psycho Mantis (well, in a way)

Physical Description: An older man whose receding white hair is slicked back.
Clad in all black, The Sorrow likes to where a dark rain coat. Maybe it's the
glasses, but there's something about him that makes him seem wise. He has
demon-looking red eyes.

The Sorrow was a medium who was able to talk with the dead. He would use this
power in a battle to communicate with the newly-dead soldiers to learn
otherwise unknowable knowledge about what the enemy was up to. After the
Cobras split up, he went over to the Soviet Union. He was killed two years ago
by The Boss when she was sent on a mission to kill him for the United States.
Even as The Boss murdered him, he still held no resentment towards her. He
understood that "one must live, and one must die." In death, he follows The
Boss around as a ghost and can cause rainstorms as a sign of his presence. He
and The Boss had baby boy together during World War II, but their child was
taken from them by the Philosophers.

The Boss
--------
Sex: Female

Nationality: United States of America

Quote: Loyalty to the end.

Boss Battle Similar To: Liquid Snake/ Solidus Snake

Physical Description: A tough looking chick with blond, shoulder-length hair.
Her attire looks like something from a science fiction movie: a bright silver
jump suit with clunky combat boots.

The Boss is a living legend-- considered the best soldier in the world by both
the top government officials and the best soldiers of the world. During World
War II she assembled the Cobra unit which helped lead to an American victory.
Along with her last apprentice Snake, she designed the Close Quarters Combat
fighting system-- making her an expert in hand-to-hand battles. To the shock
of many, The Boss has recently defected to the Soviet Union to work alongside
Colonel Volgin and help in his conspiracy to overthrow Khrushchev and the rest
of the Soviet government. To help her accomplish this, she has gathered the
Cobras once again to fight with her in battle. Her Cobra name and emotion is
The Joy.

4.4 Other Important Characters
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Last, but certainly not least. Even though they're under the "other" section,
these guys are still crucial to the plot of MGS3. All the characters didn't
fit into a certain category so I made a category for them. Beside their name
is their position in the plot (they're either with the good guys or against
them).

Ocelot (Bad Guy)
----------------
Sex: Male

Quote: What do you say to one last showdown?

Boss Battle Similar To: Revolver Ocelot (duh)/ Olga

Physical Description: A young, clean cut kid with very short hair. He looks a
lot like Revolver Ocelot (which makes sense), especially his eyes and mouth.
He sports a nice dark army uniform complemented with dark maroon.

Ocelot is a younger Revolver Ocelot seen in the past games. He is the major of
the GRU unit in the Soviet army. As always, Ocelot is highly skilled with
revolvers and has great aim. Any time he's handling his revolvers he's showing
off his twirling skills with them. Ocelot is in on the plot to capture Sokolov
and is working under the commands of Colonel Volgin.

Colonel Volgin (Bad Guy)
------------------------
Sex: Male

Quote: Kuwabara, Kuwabara.

Boss Battle Similar To: Liquid Snake/ Solidus Snake

Physical Description: Volgin wears a long, olive-green colonel's coat. He has
short white hair. His face appears mutated because of vains.

An army colonel of Soviet Union's top military unit-- the GRU. He is a member
of the Brezhnev faction-- a group whose goal is to overthrow Khrushchev and
replace him with Brezhnev. Volgin is a sadist and isn't afraid to use nuclear
warheads against even his own country. He has captured Sokolov and the
Shagohod with plans of mass producing the weapon once it's completed. To do
this, he has teamed-up with The Boss and her Cobra unit. Because of a special
suit he wears under his coat, Volgin is able to produce electricity and use it
as a weapon with his hands. With the Philosophers' Legacy, Volgin has an
almost endless amount of money with which to fund all of his operations. He
has used this money to build two weapons facilities for his own personal uses:
the Granin Design Bureau and Groznyi Grad.

Sokolov (Good Guy)
------------------
Sex: Male

Quote: All I wanted to do was build space rockets...

Reminds me of: Otacon

Physical Description: This guy kind of looks like the guy from the Monopoly
game because of his monocle and his fancy dress clothes. Age has made him bald
on the top but he still has brown around the back and sides of his head.

Sokolov is the reason for both the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater.
Snake must rescue him from the clutches of the evil Colonel Volgin. Sokolov is
a Soviet scientist who designed great rockets and then moved up to designing
weapons. He is the creator of the Shagohod. He wants to defect to the United
States where his family awaits him and no longer wishes to build weapons.

Granin (Bad Guy)
----------------
Sex: Male

Quote: A tank does not need a rocket! It needs something else... legs!! Legs
that allow it to go anywhere!!

Reminds me of: nobody

Physical Description: An old, heavy-set man. His face is very wrinkly. Granin
proudly displays his Order of Lenin medals on his pin-stripped suit. Not only
does he have a nice suit, but also nice shoes to go along with it =).

Granin, like Sokolov, designs weapons for the Soviet Union. He even has his
own weapons facility: the Granin Design Bureau. In the past he has recieved
the Order of Lenin for his outstanding contributions to his country. As of
late, however, his work has been overshadowed by Sokolov's Shagohod. He is the
original designer of Metal Gear.

President Johnson (Good Guy)
----------------------------
Sex: Male

Quote: You are a true patriot.

Physical Description: Um, he looks like the 36th President of the United States
of America.

President of the United States during the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake
Eater. His full name is Lyndon Baines Johnson. Johnson became president after
the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. He stayed in office till 1969.

Khrushchev (The Lesser of Two Evils Guy)
----------------------------------------
Sex: Male

Quote: You expect me to believe that this was all the work of a single soldier?

Physical Description: Looks like Khrushchev

The leader of the Soviet Union during both operations.

V. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
===============================================================================
These questions are the ones I see most often asked on the MGS3: Snake Eater
board at gamefaqs. Many can be answered even within this this faq, but I feel
this section will help answer the more commonly asked questions quickly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 1

* Who was the son that was taken from The Boss by the Philosophers?

Ocelot. This can be learned by comparing two conversations in the game. The
first happens fairly early in the story, and must be gotten from a secret radio
conversation between Snake and EVA. To access it, continually call EVA while
in the cave after you beat Ocelot. You'll also have to pick up the torch
before Snake will ask her about Ocelot. It takes a lot of calling to reveal
the conversation, but what EVA tells you reveals a lot.

In the radio conversation, Snake asks how Ocelot could obtain the high position
of major in the elite unit of the Ocelots. Snake says that Ocelot "can't be
any older than 18 or 19. I can't believe he's already a major." EVA explains
that from what Colonel Volgin has told her, Ocelot gets "special treatment"
because "he's the son of some legendary hero or something." Snake asks who the
mother and father are, but EVA doesn't know. However, she does know that
Ocelot's mother gave birth to him on a battlefield. Also, she tells Snake that
"when they stitched [Ocelot's mother] up, the scar was shaped like a snake."

The second conversation isn't really a conversation at all, but rather a
soliloquy from The Boss. This comes at the end of the game, right before you
battle her. This isn't hidden, so you don't have to worry about trying to get
it, as she'll tell you the speech automatically.

The Boss tells Snake that "in June of 1944, the Cobras and I took part in the
landing at Normandy... I was pregnant at the time. The Sorrow was the father.
I gave birth on the field of battle. A beautiful baby boy. But my child was
snatched away from me by the Philosophers." The Boss unzips her jump suit to
show Snake a snake-like scar going vertically down her torso-- proof that she
was a mother.

When you put these two pieces of information together, it's pretty easy to see
that Ocelot is the long lost son of The Boss. It also seems that neither
Ocelot nor The Boss knew who the other was.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 2

* Why do the Cobras explode when you kill them?

I originally thought that the answer wasn't explained in the game and had two
theories as to why they exploded. However, this isn't the case and I was
e-mailed by three people on how to find out the truth. After facing The Fury,
call Major Zero enough times and Snake will ask why the Cobras keep exploding.
The major mentions something about "the legend of the Cobra Unit" and puts on
Sigint to supply you with the answer.

The cause of the explosions are microbombs; each Cobra member carried one on
them. The reason for this comes from their missions back during World War II.
As Sigint puts it, "their missions were so top secret that not only were they
forbidden to be taken prisoner, they couldn't even leave their corpse behind.
Because of this, or so the legend goes, they carried a microbomb with them on
their missions in case they needed to commit suicide." But why do they still
carry the microbombs on them? Snake takes this question with the explanation
that "maybe they're ready to die. They've got no unit to go back to. Not even
a country." So, the Cobras know it's do or die-- if they can't accomplish
their mission then they've got nothing to live for.

Wow, it's less complicated then I thought!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 3

* Were the Cobras in on the fact that The Boss was actually working for the
  American government?

No, I don't believe so. The main proof for this is in EVA's speech about The
Boss at the end of the game. She says something along the lines of "The Boss
even betrayed her friends" for the American government. That leads you to the
conclusion that The Boss let not even the Cobras-- her friends-- know about her
mission.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 4

* Which side was everyone on?

Yes, at the end of the game when the plot twistes really start coming it can
get confusing as to who's working for whom. So, here is who the characters are
really working for.

Snake: Yes, he is actually working for the United States government.
However, he doesn't seem to happy with them toward the end of the
          game...

EVA: We thought she defected from the United States to the Soviet Union,
but she never actually worked for either of these countries. Her
          true loyalties lay with China!

Granin: Well, he worked for the Soviets but got mad at them. He still liked
the Soviet Union, but wanted to punish them for not making his Metal
          Gear.

The Boss: She really fooled us! We thought she defected from the United States
to the Soviet Union, but what really happened was that her defection
was actually part of a mission for the United States.

Ocelot: There was no doubt that he was loyal to the GRU and Volgin, until we
found out that he really works for the CIA and the Philosophers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 5

* How was Volgin able to produce electricity using only his hands?

Magic, of course. Or it could have been that suit with all those wires and
circuits under his coat, but that could have just been for show =) .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 6

* Why did The Boss allow EVA to live?

Before The Boss let EVA go, she told her the truth about the defection and the
nature of her true mission. EVA was left alive to let Snake know the truth
after he finshed his mission. The Boss wasn't to let him know, but she thought
he deserved to know the truth and also didn't want him to think ill of her
after her death.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 7

* What happened to Sokolov?

He is killed by Volgin after telling Snake about the Shagohod. His death isn't
seen, but can be heard in the torture chamber while Snake still has the bag
over his head.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 8

* Which Snake is Naked Snake?

Naked Snake is Big Boss. Yep, you play as the legendary soldier himself.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 9

* What's the deal with Volgin and Raikov and the crotch grab?

They're lovers. EVA all but comes out and tells Snake if you contact her when
you first get into Groznyi Grad. The crotch grab was because Snake was acting
odd and not talking to Volgin-- it was a way to see if it was really Raikov.

The crotch grab is an inside joke for those who've played Metal Gear Solid 2:
Sons of Liberty. In it, there is a scene in which the president of the U.S.A.
grabs Raiden's crotch. As Snake has the mask which looks like Raikov, and
Raikov looks like a clone of Raiden-- it works.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 1 0

* What did Granin do with his Metal Gear designs?

He sent them to Octacon's father in America. Also, somehow Ocelot manages to
get ahold of the designs as well.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 1 1

* Why did Big Boss (Naked Snake) turn evil?

In the earlier Metal Gear games, you must fight against Big Boss-- but that
doesn't mean that he's evil. After he finds out that The Boss was betrayed by
her own country, Big Boss begins to realize that countries don't care about or
appreciate their soldiers. His actions in other Metal Gear games are an
attempt to give other soldiers a better life. Big Boss is far from bad, he's
just misunderstood. To get a better understanding of why Big Boss does the
things he does in other Metal Gear games, watch the ending of Snake Eater. The
end explains in more detail what I'm talking about. It's so good that you may
even believe that Big Boss is the true "good guy" after watching it. However,
there is no good or evil, just different ways in which people view the world.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 1 2

* Who was Ocelot talking on the phone with at the end of the game?

We must remember that Ocelot made two seperate phone calls. The first was to
someone working for the KGB that he refers to as "Chief Director." My thoughts
are that the person he is talking to is of the Brezhnev faction or even
possibly Brezhnev himself. Ocelot tells him that "Khrushchev is finished.
Your time has finally arrived." Pretty clear it has something to do with
Brezhnev. Ocelot's second phone call is to someone working for the CIA that he
calls "Mr. Director." This someone wants the Philosophers revived. Mr.
Director also knows of The Boss' true mission, so he's got to be high up on the
political ladder. From the title of Mr. Director, I'm guessing that Ocelot is
talking with the CIA Director. The CIA Director appears in the credits for a
voice actor. While we can't hear his part of the conversation, I still think
that it's the CIA Director on the phone with Ocelot.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q u e s t i o n & A n s w e r # 1 3

* What is Snake holding at the end of the game while he's listening to EVA's
message? Is it the Philosophers' Legacy?

Yes, this can be confusing. Just when we think we know what's happening, we
wonder what the heck is Snake holding. EVA's recorded voice had just informed
us that she had stolen the Legacy, yet Snake appears to be holding the very
microfilm EVA claimed she took. Here are some theories on what happened from
e-mails I have received.

Vincent's Theory: Okay, The Boss gave Ocelot the real Legacy after it was given
to her by Volgin. She was a daughter of a Philosopher and knew that Ocelot was
working for the CIA. Ocelot's mission was to get the Legacy for the United
States and use it to revive the Philosophers. This was also a goal she
mentioned before you battle her. The Boss gave Snake a fake microfilm, knowing
that EVA worked for China (since she was an instructor at the Philosophers
school EVA went to) and would steal it. So, what does Snake look at, then
throw in idsgust on the table as he listens to the tape EVA made? I'm guessing
that it was the left over case the Legacy came in, and that EVA removed the
microfilm containing the Legacy from it.

Chris' Theory: What Snake is holding at the end is in fact the Philosophers'
Legacy. The game never actually shows EVA physically take the microfilm off of
Snake, she just tells him that she stole it from him. What this means is that
The Boss gives EVA what she thinks to be the real microfilm. Since EVA takes
it for her country, she says that she has stolen it from Snake. What The Boss
gives Snake is the real Philosophers' Legacy. The Boss tricks EVA into taking
the fake Legacy to her country.

I myself wondered what it was, and was impressed by these theories. Thank you
Vincent and Chris for e-mailing me them and allowing me to share them with
everyone.
