This is a simple one. If your food has spoiled, save and exit the game. Then, go into the PS2 control settings and set your clock back a bit. Load your saved game and viola, your food's fresh again!

Of course I must point out in fairness that it may be easier to catch new plants and animals to eat... And that your food will cease to exist if you set the clock back too far...
