The EXP chip helps you to raise the experience amount of your Digimon and helps it to evolve. That's all.

Okay man, here comes an extended answer. I didn't had time on Monday to answer this completely.

For example, you have a level 11 Greymon, with 123 EXP, and it needs 45 nore to level 12. You use EXP chips to leave it with 170 EXP, two more EXP points than what you needed to raise his level. You might say: It should have grown by a level!. You can only raise your level in battle. Your Next Level space should say 0, then battle, Greymon gains experience normally if he wins, and grows one level.
