Choose your Character Carefully

Learn how to Block
It is essential in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax that you are proficient in blocking enemy attacks. In order to block you need to hold back on your controller. 'Back' is in relation to your character, if it is facing left you hold right on the D-pad and vice versa. Holding back is your neutral position block, and it will protect you from high attacks. To block low attacks you need to hold the 'Down' button on the D-pad. You will be able to block most of the enemy attacks that come your way, there are though some that are unblockable and those you will need to quickly dodge to avoid taking damage. Whenever an enemy is about to unleash an unblockable attack two exclamation points will appear over its head just as they wind up their attack.
Focus on Learning the Basic Offensive Options First
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax can be a fairly complex game if you are a new player, try not to get overwhelmed with all the different mechanics and systems playing off of each other. You will find that if you start off by learning the basic offensive options you will begin to understand how things work and how to deal with certain mechanics. You have normal A and B attacks, A attacks are weak and fast while B attacks are strong but slow. Tapping the A attack button quickly on your controller will enable yo to do Auto Combos, pressing A+B while your character is in a neutral state will make them perform an out All-Out-Rush attack which you can get extra hits from by mashing the A+B button during the attack. If you hold down on the D-pad and press the A+B button you will do a sweep attack that will knock enemies off their feet.
Use your Persona
In the Persona series of games a Persona is an attack that is a manifestation of your character's personality. Unlike Shadows that are malevolent manifestations of your character's inner thoughts a Persona is a manifestation of the same feelings but tamed and trained. Each of the characters in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax has access to Persona attacks, and they are tied to your C and D inputs. Similar to the characters, the Persona attacks are all different, most of them though are long-range attacks that are affective at keeping your enemy at a distance. Your character has a Persona Gauge that runs out from use or when your Persona takes damage, when this runs out you will need to wait for it to replenish before you can use it again. Make sure you use the titular spirit warrior whenever it is available.
