I can not figure out how to open the journal - I have the trivet which I believe is supposed to be the decoder but still cannot figure out how to open it.....help!

If you have the...ah, I know how to make it a little vague.
Listen to the CC (there's the vague part) record, and associate the sounds you hear in it with the symbols and letters on the front of the Trivet. It'll make more sense what to do next once you do that.
