In skirmish I can't get free for all. All it shows me is battle mode, so am I doing something wrong or do I have to unlock it?

It may be in a patch. I forgot. Some mods also have FFA in them.
It really depends on your version, if you haven't got 1.06, then I recommend you update to that.
There is a way actually to get free for all game in skirmish in RA2, all you have to do is the following :
1 - go to ra2 folder C:WestwoodRA2
2 - look for an INI file that is called RA2 and says configuration settings and open it.
3 - look for gamemode under the subtitle SKIRMISH
4 - change the value from 1 to 2 next to the game mode
5 - Have fun!
