1) INTRODUCTION
Welcome, folks, to my FAQ for the latest installment of the DS
version of the popular Madden NFL football series. While the DS
version does not have some of features of the console versions,
such as Madden I.Q., there are plenty of DS_exclusive features
to keep you occupied for a while.
Without further to do, let's play some football!
2) CONTROLS
This section is separated into two control schemes--One for the
classic controls (i.e., the controls you normally use on the
console) and one for touch screen controls.
2.1) CLASSIC CONTROLS

3) GENERAL STRATEGIES
Here are some general strategies to help you win quite a few
football games:
3.1) ON OFFENSE
1: Run the ball as much as possible. This can be used for
running for a short gain, getting a first down on 3rd-and-1
and, most importantly, keep the clock running to eat up
as much time as possible.
2: Only pass the ball if it's 3rd and 10, you're trailing
by at least a touchdown or to stop the clock by throwing
an intentional incomplete pass.
3: Mix up different play styles as much as possible, as
the defensive A.I. will never be fooled by the same play
consecutive times
4: If you're trailing by 8 points and you score a touchdown
in the last two minutes of the game, try running the ball in
for a two-point conversion instead of kicking the extra
point.
3.2) ON DEFENSE
1: Try mixing up different defensive plays as well, as
the opposing A.I. will frequently switch between passing
and running plays.
2: Go for the interception as much as possible. This is best done with
the A.I. controlling your defenders
3: If you're giving up a ton of yards on consecutive plays,
try shifting defensive lines to close whatever holes are exposed.
4: Here's a fun way to play defense--Select a goalline play, usually a
blitz play, and call as many audibles as possible to completely
confuse the offensive A.I. Note that this is not 100% foolproof
and is prone to backfire.
3.3) ON SPECIAL TEAMS
1: After most touchdowns, it is best to kick the extra point. You
may have to adjust the angle of the kick to ensure the kick
is good.
2: Don't go for field goals from farther than the 40-yard line.
Also note that when the field goal distance is measured,
it accounts the actual length of the end zone, which is around 10 yards
itself.
3: To improve your chances of returning a kickoff or
punt for a touchdown, use juke moves whenever possible
to shake off would-be tacklers on the kicking team.
4: If you have to punt, try punting it out of bounds to ensure
your opponent doesn't return it for an easy 6.

The entire mini-games section has been overhauled and this year is
called the "Rec Room". Included in this room are the returning
mini-game from last year's Madden title known as "paper football",
plus three brand new minigames--Hit the Hole, Playbook Flash and
Last Minute Miracle
5.1) PAPER FOOTBALL
AUTHOR'S NOTE: The following section has been excerpted from
the Madden NFL 08 DS guide, also written by Robert Johnson.
8) PAPER FOOTBALL STRATEGIES
New this year to the DS version is the paper football minigame.
The rules of paper football are simple--You must score points
by flicking the ball to the edge of the table to score a touchdown.
Once a touchdown is scored, the player has a chance to kick a P.A.T.
To elick the ball, you have to slide the stylus across the ball.
The faster you slide it, the farther the ball will go.
Keep in mind that a ball that is partially off the table is considered
on the edge of the table and results in a touchdown.
To kick the ball, repeatedly tap the stylus in the red box to fill up
the meter, then kick on the small cirlce to kick it
through the uprights.
The ball is turned over to the other player when you
use all four downs or the ball falls completely off the table.
The best way to master this mini game is to play against the
computer, then use what you learn against human opponents.
5.2) LAST MINUTE MIRACLE
This particular minigame is football with a turn-based strategy
twist. The situation here is you're mimicking the Music City
Miracle in the 1999 AFC Wild Card playoff game, where
the Tennesee Titans returned a kickoff in the last 30 seconds
of the game for the winning touchdown and effectively
stealing a guaranteed win for the Buffalo Bills in a
dramatic fasion.
You begin the minigame with three lives or "downs" and
you have to move the ball down the field for a touchdown. Beware
of the red linebackers, who will do everything to stop you in
your tracks. Each time the blue player with the ball
is tackled, you lose one life or "down". Run out
of downs and the game ends. Each touchdown you score is
worth 7 points and you get an extra down.
In order to get the ball down the field, you have to pass it
to another blue player either laterally or backwards.
Note that forward passes are illegal moves in this minigame.
A general strategy is if you run out of blue players to throw
the ball to, try using juke moves to create some breathing room.
Keep in mind, however, that using a Juke Move will

5.3) PLAYBOOK FLASH
This is a minigame that fully utilizes the touch screen
and stylus of the DS.
When the game beings, there will be drawings
of certain plays, but will only appear for 3 seconds.
The objective is to memorize the pattern and draw it
correctly, using the DS Stylus as a pen.
For each play you get correct, you'll earn 1 point,
times the number of lines you had to draw for that play.
Once you get consecutive plays drawm correctly,
the number of lines to draw increases, up to four
per play. Getting one play wrong will
reduce the number of lines to only 1.
The game is over when it has run out.
5.4) HIT THE HOLE
This minigame is every running back's dream of
scoring the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl.
Using the DS stylus, you move the running back around
the tacklers and into the end zone for a touch down.
Each touch down you score will earn you 7 points.
Scoring a second consecutive touchdown will double the point
value. A third-straight straigt touchdown will
net you triple points.
The fourth straight touchdown and any more consecutive
ones wll earn you 4X the point value of the touchdown.
Should the running back get tackled, the next touchdown
you score afterwards will only be 7 points.
