There are rocks on the island that can be picked up. One is 2 screens to the right of your base camp. Another is next to the stream 3 screens to the left of the base camp. The screen to the right of Mr. Weeder has one, the one with the vine bush and the yams. And there is one more on the island once you make the canoe. Just tap the rock, select 'Hunt for Bugs' And smash them by poking with the stylus.
