I know this must be a stupid question, but how do you write mail to your friends?

You purchase mail (they sell it on Route 9). After that you go into your inventory, use the mail, write something on it, attach it to a Pokemon, and then trade it to your friend. Not a stupid question haha it's not that obvious.
