There is no way, but there is a trick to it. If you havent already done it you collect 5 coins (you no tose 3 empty things that look chained together at the bottom of the screen when you start a level?) and you no when you purchase some kind of mushroom room? It asks you if you want to save, say yes. Because you no when you turn it off and youve made progress it wont save. And if you need coins just go back and redo the levels and find the coins. Its an easy trick.

Or you can defeat a castle level and it will ask you to save. But an easier way would be to defeat the final level on level 8 then when you click start on your ds it will give you an option to save.

You mean checkpoints,you have to reach a certain point in the level and a flag will appear
