Question for Mario Kart DS

On the wfc I've seen snakers do a very strange thing on the track. They fall off it and then reappear after half a second on the track again, but miles ahead of where they fell off and they just carry on without being dropped by that floating snowman with the flag. Anyone know how they do this?
