How can I move on to the next stage on the nintendo ds I always finish first but the next stage doesn't appear.

In the grand prix if you just finished one race, it doesnt count. You have to complete the whole grand prix in first (like you said).if you finished the first one you wont unlock anything. But complete the one farest to the right. Then you will unlock the next stage or grand prix. Complete all the races at the bottom and youll unlock a new character.
