If you want a quick boost without using a item here's how you press the L or R button to skid round corners but if you keep on left and right over and over again you will start to have blue fire coming out of your wheels then your fire will turn orange and when you let go of the all buttons you get a quick boost.

But you have to learn how to skid propelly round corners with just L and R without bumping into walls before you can boost while skiding but remember you can only do this round corners.
