If you're looking to get the highest possible score in any level, then do the following:

1) Eat Melons - You might think you'll get a high score by eating your Lucky or Favorite Fruit, but there won't be enough of either in any level to fill your Yoshi. There are, however, exactly enough melons in every stage to fill up your screen. Melons don't give the most amount of points individually, but the value will multiply each time you eat another one consecutively.

2) Collect Coins - Coins aren't worth much, but if you want to get those high scores, make sure to nab whatever ones you can find.

3) Defeat Same Color Shy Guys - Instead of eating Shy Guys, you will earn more points for simply defeating them. You'll earn even more points for defeating Shy Guys that are the same color of your Yoshi.

4) Collect All Three Hearts - This might seem obvious, but Giant Hearts give you loads of points.
