This is your basic Need For Speed Introduction with burnouts and such. Its a nice enjoyable little bit to watch if your bored, you'll skip once you've seen it twice. Theres not a whole lot going on during the entire thing. How it starts is creative with the EA symbols being a tire and that becoming a tire on a one of the cars, but other than a little video theres nothing here.
EA cheated the PS2 with this game. The next-gen versions for PS3 and Xbox360 have better car graphics, better crash graphics, better everything. Theres even a windtunnel in the customization. It can't totally be blamed on EA I suppose because the PS2 just wouldn't have the power to do the kinds of things that are happening with the PS3 version while keeping all of the current parts of the game unaffected. I'd say solid, but not that impressive. One very unfortunate thing I've found is that wen you run into dirt, sparks start to come from the dirt and you bumper...how is that possible?
The sound in this game is relatively good. A revving engine sounds great, and the cars sound just like they sound when they are drifting or doing burnouts before the drags. Sadly, this good sound is lost in crashes and other collisions. When your car flips, it sound like a car with bad suspension just went over a spped bump too fast and the spring are creaking. That makes a convincing crash with sound very difficult.
Personally, I think that the gameplay is excellent. There are obviously some flaws in the game, but you'll never find many, if any, games that don't have some noticeable flaws. At times I feel kind of annoyed when my car automatically slows down a little bit so that I wont hit the car in front of me, especially when I was preparing to slingshot around him and go flying by him at 230mph. Theres nothing seriously wrong with the gameplay that I've found, but I haven't been looking for too long so far, so well see.
Sadly, once Ryo is done, the game is done. Theres not much to keep playing for, especially because this game was not given online features. Online play would have really helped make the game a lot better I think. It would have allowed people to play people instead of the computer, and it would provide a way to show off a little bit and see how good you are compared to some other racers out there.
Of everything that I'm doing in this game right now, customizing cars is probably the most fun. Winning money is so simple and just downright easy. I then get to go use the money on new cars and making them look good and race like a champion. Drifting is easily the best race mode. Drag is over in 12 seconds or less, speed is annoying at times due to the need to start over from crashing or losing late in the race, and grip is extremly simple if you have the right car. Drift definitely has the most variation and takes the most skill. I'd give this game a C+/B-, not great, not terrible. I've always loved the need for speed series and will be looking forward to seeing what somes next for the series in NFS: Undercover (or whatever the new one is going to be called)
