If 45,260 points finishes a tournament. Is it possible to acquire more points than needed after finishing? I ask because the leader in my group has 53,198 points.

Yes, I've seen points much higher than the milestones list. I guess there are no more rewards to be won, and they just roll for more points or to try to increase their progress in a banner event or special event or to win the leaderboard rewards.
