Coal comes from the chimney which is given to you when you start the event. You can create more chimneys by merging bricks. The chimney will also give you Santa sacks and stockings. The stockings can be merged and will eventually give you sweets that can be merged to be put in grandma's oven. Coal can also be merged and be put in grandma's oven. Grandma's oven will give you cookies that can be merged to complete tasks. The Santa sacks that I mentioned earlier will give you presents. The presents will give you clothes that can be used to complete tasks. The stockings can also give you the not localised robot but that can be rare. Hope this long and detailed answer helped.
