Know when to Use Topspin and Backspin
To have any chance of consistently coming in under Par on any given hole, it is crucial that you understand when you should use topspin and backspin. If you hit a golf ball with topspin, you will give it more momentum upon landing, effectively making it roll further. Hitting a golf ball with backspin will do the opposite, even making the ball roll back upon landing. It is recommended that you experiment with these two shot modifiers in practice mode, so you understand how they will impact your shots and also give yourself the opportunity to become familiar with them.
To give the golf ball topspin, you double-tap the A button on your controller during the power adjusting phase when you swing your club. To put backspin on your golf ball, you instead press B on your controller. If you double-tap B you will get extra backspin, this particular shot is useful when you want to prevent your ball from overshooting the hole or if you are chipping onto a sloped green.
