Trying to survive on the battlefield is difficult when you are surrounded on all sides so a good strategy to make things easier is to pick one edge of the screen and stay close to it. Make sure you clear out enemies as soon as they get close and only venture to the other side of the screen periodically. The only downside from employing this tactic is that it means levels will take longer to clear.
