Okay, first thing: The Sims 3 is not for iPad. Yet. It's compatible with iPad, but it's designed for iPod and iPhone.
The answer to your question: No, you can't have more than one child at a time. There are some conflicting ideas about whether you can have you child taken away, remarry, and then have another kid. You'll just have to figure it out. But you can only have one at a time.
Does you're kid ever grow up from a toddler
You're supposed to only be able to have one kid, but I figured out a glitch to get two! Marry someone and get them to move into your house. Fufill your needs until your sim is "very happy". Pause the game. Now, tap your sim's spouse and try for baby. DO NOT UNPAUSE YET. You then tap the phone and adopt baby. Now you unpause the game, and if your sim is "very happy", you will get two notices: One says your sim is having a baby, and the other will say your sim has been chosen to adopt a baby!
I tried that and unfortunately it does not work. I got both messages but only one baby
You have to marry a couple ask one to move in then ask it to move out and then in again and quickly ask the other to move in.then since you already have a baby you get the couples baby too.
