In VS mode, do you have to get 100 stars that are at the bottom of the characters square to get mewtwo because my friend told me

Na, hes lying, you must either:
Play 700 matchs in vs mode
Or
Play Vs mode for 20 hours with human players. One way to do this is put 1 stock battle, with another 1 of your remotes, place 2 people (both human) and set your best character to remote 1. Then leave it on over night. Then when you add taht time to how much games you've played already, kill the other character and mewtwo will challenge you

No - there's only 2 ways to get Mewtwo, you have to do one of the following:
1) Play a total of 20 hours in Melee vs. Mode.
2) Play a total of 700 Melee vs. Matches.

That was what I thought first but no, you need to either win 700 versus matches or play on versus matches for 20 hours.
