It's just a bouns effect. It's not useful for anything.
He changes color if you throw the "Tricky ball" and lets him fetch it about 10 times.

Each color change affects how much grub tops is used for his commands. So yes there is a use for the play command

Not sure which one uses less um sure the blueish one (third color change and last) uses the less amount. There is three color changes then after the third it is a reping cycle.
