For a Shadow Chao, you don't need an AR.
First, make it a Dark Chao (obviously), but give it Green-Class Small Animals (Boar, Bunny, Cheetah) and Chaos Drives. I find that a good standard is at least Level 20, just to be sure. It will emerge from it's blue Cocoon and...
WTF?! It has GREEN stripes, not red!!!
This is where the SECOND evolution comes into play. However, I am not sure myself exactly when to give it more Green-Class items (before, around, or when they're 4/5), so hopefully someone can clear that up for us.
