Yes unfortunately he does die, and no, there aren't any more stories to play.
I don't think you can get anything with 50 emblems exept something new at the chao blackmarket maybe.

HE DOSEN'T DIE! He comes back in sonic heroes and even though they think he is fake, he isn't really fake. And then he comes in shadow the hedgehog and finds out were he came from in the last story. After that he works for GUN
I think shadow dies but is brought back to life by eggman and kept in a pod deep within his layer until rouge invaded the layer looking for treasure but finding shadow in the pod.

Shadow does stay alive. In the game, Shadow The Hedgehog, He was teleported to Earth and doesnt remember anything.
Shadow DOES survive but this is what happened, after he saved the earth by sacrificing himself, one of eggmans robots found him and they took him to eggman, shadow lost all of his memories when he impacted the earth, eggman kept him in a pod thats why at the beginning of the dark side story in sonic adventure 2, rouge finds him inside eggmans base, then after sonic heroes shadow the hedgehog took place and thats when he regains his memories.
ORIGINALLY, Shadow was mean't to die in the end of SA2, SONIC TEAM designed shadow to be a one-off character and that shadow would be gone forever, BUT because of the reaction of the fans and popularity, sonic Team had to bring shadow back.
In the recreation of it in Sonic X, Shadow removes his rings. Assuming he did the same thing before using Chaos Control in Sonic Adventure 2, he could have used all his power up, as the rings are like his stableisers. So yes, Shadow uses all his energy and dies. As for Sonic Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog, if you listen to Rouge, she questions Shadow's existance, as the capsules released were never found. I believe that during the time between Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes, Eggman found the capsule with the real Shadow in and locked it away for safe keeping. He also locked Omega in there to gaurd it. However, Omega ends up going against Eggman. Rouge sneaks in and opens the capsule to find the real Shadow inside. Note: None of my sources are from Sonic X apart from the ring theory. Rouge questions him in the actual game when he finds out she's a spy.
