I think if you either come out of or come in a hole your HP is recharged. (this is my favourite game ever!) or you can end a day and come back down.

One does not simply "heal" the captains. However, their suits are restored automatically when entering/exiting a cavern, unless their suits were already torn and they're unconscious.

You can't. Just happens at the end of the day.
