The 4 blank spaces you are seeing are extra characters you can play as I will mention them in a little bit. There are no other characters that you can get other then the ones I will mention right now.
Monty Mole - Beat Challenge mode with Mario
Toadette - Beat Challenge Mode with Peach
Dixie Kong - Beat Challenge mode with Donkey Kong
Baby Luigi - Beat Challenge Mode with Yoshi
Petey Pirahna - Beat Challenge Mode with Wario
Hammer Bro - Beat Challenge Mode with Bowser ( you get bowser by beating challenge mode on special difficulty with any character once).
