Question for Sonic Advance

I know that you can get rings from sonic by getting them and pressing a+b+select+start and they should go to the tiny chao garden but for some reason it doesn't work on mine. Can someone please help me?

Go to time attack get as much rings as you can finish the level go to quit or whatever it says to get out of that menu go to the garden you will have the rings you just got.
