It works as long as you keep walking (or ride in your bike). Your Pokemon's ability will kick in randomly. It may take some time so be patient. Keep checking it's sprite to see if he found anything. the mystery gift phrase is: LINK TOGETHER WITH ALL
The code is link together will like he said but he left out a detail.Make sure your meowth has the pick up ability cause I think they can also have limber to.
To use your pokemons (pick up)ability battle a lot cause every time you battle there's 35% chance of getting an item
Only particular Pokemon have the Pick Up ability as you have said, Meowth is one of them, you just have to walk around and I also believe battling helps your chances. The higher your pokemons level is the higher chance it has to pick up an item and a rare item. The code for Mystery Gift is LINK TOGETHER WITH ALL, enter that into the clipboard under the manager in any Pokemart!

The Pokemon that have pick up ability are:
Meowth,
Phanphy,
Persian,
And I would recomend using meowth's ability to max use by using pay day during a battle so when you get an item you will also gain money while meowth is picking up items!!! =) hope I helped!!!
Also if you havent noticed if meowth is holding an item, it can't pick up one.... Kinda obvious but still
