To do a free tournament you need to trade Navis from the corresponding game and then you can go to the board to battle the Navis.

You can also get their chips if you beat them at the end of the tournament. YOU CAN ONLY BATTLE NAVIS THAT WERE TRADED OVER, OTHERWISE YOU CAN'T BATTLE THEM IN THE TOURNAMENT. You don't need to link up to battle them, but to get them traded you do.
