There's no way... The only way is to not witness the black heart event of them. If you see it, gray will start going to the library and he won't stop going :(
You can't make him stop going to library, but you can evade first rival event by not going to blacksmith after you triggered black heart event. You need to get his heart change to purple and trigger purple heart event. Then, you can go to blacksmith whenever and Gray will not going to library. So, no library, no mary, no rival
