First on the Golden Sun title screen before pressing Start hold the control pad to the left and hold B. This will bring up a new option on the Main Menu. Select it and then you can choose to transfer the saved data in one of 2 ways, either by linking up with Golden Sun; The Lost Age or by writing down a password in Golden Sun and inputing it into Golden Sun; The Lost Age. The password takes a lot longer but needs no link cable and only 1 Gameboy Advance (or whatever other system you are playing the game on).
The benefits are that when you get Issac's group in Golden Sun; The Lost Age they will be at the same levels with the same items and djinn they had, during the game some people will give you some rare items, and it is the only way to collect all of the djinn and gain access to the game's hardest boss and biggest summonings.
