Final Fantasy III for the DS is the only version of Final Fantasy III to ever hit American shores. This game was released in Japan, but never made it to the US until now. Long ago, there was an imbalance of power between Light and Dark. The Light was growing out of hand. Therefore, four Warriors of Darkness were chosen. These Warriors quested to stop the Light and to bring balance once again. Now, the opposite is occuring. The Darkness is growing rapidly, causing yet another imbalance. Four Warriors of Light must be chosen. These four Warriors are just four young adults: Luneth, Arc, Refia, and Ingus. They must gain the powers of the crystals and defeat the Cloud of Darkness.
Final Fantasy III is a very old game. Back then, the game had poor graphics quality, compared to now. The Nintendo DS version has updated graphics, along with a stunning cinema in the intro movie. All environments and characters are in 3-D now. The graphics of Final Fantasy III are very similar to the graphics of Final Fantasy VII. Though there are no "good graphics" cutscenes during the story, the overall graphics are decent.
Any Final Fantasy gamer wil recognize the music played at the main menu. Some returning songs are the chocobo song, the Fat Chocobo song, and the fanfare at the end of battles which is featured in almost every Final Fantasy. Background music has very little variation, however. Many areas have the exact same music as another area, making it redundant. Therefore, the sound category is quite lacking.
Final Fantasy III has a pretty nice gameplay. The storyline is very interesting, with many NPC's and plenty of bosses. This game features the battle system where all commands are selected first, then the battle plays out according to character speed. Also, during the quest, you will encounter NPC's that travel with you. These characters can give information, as well as give support in battle. This game uses a world map, with towns featured as a small icon. Overall gameplay gets an 8 out of 10.
Final Fantasy III will definitely last quite awhile. Though the world map may seem small in the beginning, later on, you realize that the world is a lot bigger than you thought. Also, most areas that feature bosses, like caves, are very long and winding, with loads of fierce enemies. There are also plenty of puzzles to solve. The job system provides for a great reason to play more. Many die-hard gamers will try to master all the jobs, providing an ultimate party. At times, Final Fantasy III may get annoying, but the length of the game will make you smile.
Overall, this game gets from an 8 to an 8.5 out of 10. Even though the game has newly rendered graphics, it's the whole package that determines a game's overall value. The good thing is that this game has the whole package. It is a challenging, yet fun game. Many games are too short so that players get bored with it very quickly. Final Fantasy III is not one of these games. With it's exciting storyline, enormous dungeons and castles, and an even bigger world, Final Fantasy III is one amazing game.
