The game uses a forced upgrade system that requires you to have the required levels or amount of health points to play a stage. When a dragon fails to meet the requirement the game will warn you and take you to the upgrade screen. If you then do not have enough coins to buy the necessary upgrades you will have to replay previously completed stages which will cost a life (heart) to ge them.
