Dragon Ball Z: Buus Fury is a sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku 2. After Gohan beats Cell, he tries to live a normal life, but he realizes that the normal life he desires is not possible. Goku, who died in Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku 2, gets an opportunity to go back to the real world for 24 hours, for good behavior. The story is about how Gohan, who participates in a battle in a tournament, gets his power absorbed. This raw power is about to be used to open a shell that houses the powerful creature, Majin Buu. The goal is to stop this from happening. This game features five characters: Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and Goten. You must use them all in order to progress through the game.
The graphics of Buus Fury resemble those of the Legacy of Goku 1 and 2. There is really no change at all. However, those graphics are still pretty good. Moves like Kamehameha have a cool effect. Super Saiyan also is very interesting to watch. There are no real cutscenes where the graphics quality changes, but that doesn't matter. The characters all look like they do in the show and manga.
Dragon Ball Z: Buus Fury has ok sound. The background music is somewhat interesting, although most of it will get stuck in your head, as the music is pretty repetitive. All sound effects sound good though. Special moves all sound like they do on the cartoon show. Overall, sound is lacking however. Since the game is for the GBA, voices cannot be effectively incorporated into the game, causing a lack of overall sound quality.
The gameplay is very good, for it compares with the Legacy of Goku. Controls are simple, being that the GBA itself is simple. The leveling up system is nice since stat boosting is entirely manual, so you can make each character custom to your needs. However, the game is a little too easy. If you just level up strength, you can just punch your way through all the enemies, dealing massive damage. Bosses are very little challenge this way. Also, the limited amount of energy your characters have results in little use of moves like Ki Blast. Therefore, the gameplay is an eight out of ten.
Dragon Ball Z: Buus Fury is a very short game. The levels are fairly small in size, as are the amount of levels in general. Bosses themselves are a breeze, espcially if your character has high strength. There is no real challenge in this game. Training is hardly needed, for there are plenty of enemies to face as you head towards the goal. The only training one would have to do is to make sure that each character is the right level to open a certain door that corresponds with them. This is why this game is a 6 out of 10 in lastability.
Overall, this game gets from a 7 to a 7.5. The game is good if you've played previous Dragon Ball Z games, but it is still quite boring. Fighting is too redundant, as is the storyline itself. Humor is scarce, so the whole game is pretty serious. The limited choice of characters is also very disappointing. Many players want to be able to have a wide selection of characters, but Buus Fury only features five, unless you count Gotenks(the fusion of Trunks and Goten) as six. Ultimately, this game is good, but not great.
