Breath of Fire 2 is not a direct sequel to the first Breath of Fire, but they are related. You start out as a young boy named Ryu, who lives in a town called Gate. His mother was part of the Dragon Clan. His father, Ganer, is the priest of the local church. One day, his sister, Yua, runs off. Ryu finds her in the woods behind Gate. There is a large dragon there. After walking back from the woods, Ryu finds that his father and sister are gone, and no one in town recognizes him. He goes to the church where he stays as an orphan. There, he befriends a kid named Bow, who is really a dog. They leave Gate, and end up in a cave, where a fearsome beast resides. Breath of Fire 2 is all about Ryu's quest to save the world from demons that are popping up all over the world, and to uncover the secrets of the mysterious St.Eva.
For a Gameboy Advance game, the graphics aren't all that bad. There are no real cutscenes, and the graphics never change, except from battle to field graphics. Surprisingly, this game's battle graphics are better than field graphics, whereas most games are quite the opposite. Most characters and scenery look realistic, so the graphics are overall good.
I'd have to say that Breath of Fire 2 has amazing music. Granted, it is only videogame music, but it still can be quite addicting. The background music really helps give a nice setting to whatever is taking place at the time, whether it be a joyous moment or a tragic one. Sound effects are also good quality. The sounds of Breath of Fire 2 are not something you'll put on your MP3 player, but it helps you realize what a great game this is.
The storyline is just amazing in Breath of Fire 2. Controls are also very easy to understand. The battle system resembles Final Fantasy III, where you select commands for all your characters, and then the battle commences, based on player speed. Magic is also cool since some magic affects the environment. Breath of Fire 2 also features some cool side quests. The best feature is Township. This town is completely unique. When it starts, it is empty, but the player can find people from all over to come to their town, whether to set up shop, or to give some kind of service. This game definitely delivers in thsi category.
There is no doubt that this game will last a long time. There are plenty of different towns and cities, each with it's own role in the story. You'll end up visiting them all, learning more and more about your quest, and receiving new allies. Not to mention that many players will go hunt for the six Shamans, to help boost your characters. Breath of Fire 2 is sure to stay in your GBA for a long time.
This game definitely gets a nine out of ten. Though not perfect, Breath of Fire 2 has all the qualities of an amazing game. The best part is that you can play this game even if you have never played the first Breath of Fire, which expands the type of audience this game is geared toward. Though playing the first Breath of Fire may help you understand the basics of the Breath of Fire series, it certainly is not required to enjoy Breath of Fire 2. This game is one of those games that pro gamers should definitely have.
