Lockpicking in Baldur's Gate 3 is an essential skill you need to know as lots of the best things in the game are hidden behind items such as doors and chests that you need to unlock. To unlock these objects you will require an item called 'Thieves' Tools'. Only once you have this tool will you be able to unlock them. You will be able to know if something is locked by hovering the cursor over the object, if a padlock appears it indicates that it is locked.
How to Get Thieves's Tools
The Thieves's Tool item is not difficult to get hold of in Baldur's Gate 3. All you need to do is open chests during the early stages of the game until you come across it. Thieves's Tools are one-use items, so you will need another set to try again if you fail to unlock it.
How to Lockpick
Once you have the Thieves's Tool open up your inventory and right-click the item followed by selecting the 'Add to Hotbar' option in the game. Now press the short key and click on what it is you want to unlock. Whether you succeed in lockpicking or not will depend on your 'Sleight of Hand' skill, which is found within the 'Dexterity' ability branch.
For example, a rickety shack will likely have a DC of around 10, while the door to a vault could be as high as 20. A DC 'Difficulty Class' is a measurement of how easy or hard it is to solve a problem. If the DC is low, you have a higher chance of success; the opposite is true for high DCs. Keep in mind that there are some things that will not open on your first attempt, so it is recommended that you make sure you have several Thieves's Tools in your inventory at all times.
Other Ways to Unlock
If unlocking the item Thieves's Tools is proving too difficult you can always resort to finding the key, which you can typically find by searching the surrounding area or by pickpocketing anyone nearby to see if they have the key.
