How to Solve the Defiled Temple Moon Puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3

At the Defiled Temple you will find a puzzle that blocks your path to the Selenite Temple and the Underdark. This How to Solve the Defiled Temple Moon Puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3 guide will tell you the solution for solving it.

How to Enter the Defiled Temple

Your exploration of Faerun in Baldur's Gate 3 will eventually lead you to the Goblin Camp. Go to the northern section of the Goblin Camp and head inside the Shattered Sanctum. There at the southwest corner of the sanctum, you will find a door beside a brazier and a headless statue which you can unlock using a Thieves' Tool.

The door leads to a room that has another door which you can unlock by using another Thieves' Tool. The second door you open will give you access to the Defiled Temple. Once inside look for an entrance that takes you down to the crypt, there you will find the Moon Puzzle.

We have a How to Unlock Doors and Chests in Baldur's Gate 3 guide that will tell you everything you need to know about the Thieves' Tool item and lockpicking.

How to Solve the Moon Puzzle

The Moon Puzzle is solved by rotating the stone discs in such a way that all the white orbs are positioned away from the illuminated stone disc at the bottom. When all the white orbs are in the correct position, the door leading to the Selunite Outpost in the Underdark will open. Below are the steps for solving the puzzle.

    • Step 1: Rotate the top stone disc once.
    • Step 2: Rotate the left stone disc once.
    • Step 3: Rotate the right stone disc twice.
    • Step 4: Rotate the bottom stone disc three times.
    • Step 5: Rotate the left stone disc twice.

How to Skip the Moon Puzzle

There is an alternate way to access the Underdark that skips having to solve the Moon Puzzle and that is to use the Lockpick option on a lever that is near the north side of the room along the east side of the stairs. If your party has a high enough passive Perception check someone will notice a lever on the wall.

How to Unlock the Lever

You will discover that the lever is locked but if you Right-click on it, choose Lockpick, and have a DC 15 Sleight of Hand (Dexterity) check you will be able to pull the lever so that it opens the door which enables you to proceed to the Selunite Outpost below.
