How to Defeat Balthazar in Baldur's Gate 3

Balthazar is a powerful wizard encountered in Act 2 within the Gauntlet of Shar while progressing the Find Ketheric Thorm's Relic quest. Balthazar uses his formidable necromancer abilities to summon an undead army to fight you. This How to Defeat Balthazar in Baldur's Gate 3 guide will tell you how you can make this boss fight a lot easier.

Where to Find Balthazar

At the end of Act 2 in Baldur's Gate 3 when your party is searching for Nightsong, you will cross paths with Balthazar. The actual encounter takes place after the Gauntlet of Shar's many trials.

Preparation for Balthazar

Before the fight with Balthazur begins in Baldur's Gate 3 it is essential you make sure each companion in your party has a few health potions at their disposal. Potions that will be particularly useful for the upcoming boss fight are Silence, Protection from Poison, and Spirit Guardians.

Attacks that will be effective include Beacon of Hop, Divine Smite, and Thornwhip. Having spells such as Silence or Counterspell is crucial against Balthazar as they allow spellcasters to interrupt another caster's spellcasting, causing it to fail and have no effect.

How to Defeat Balthazar's Undead Skeletons

Before you engage in combat with Balthazar detach the strongest ranged attacker you have in your party and place them on the rock overlooking the arena. This will allow them to take out the enemies that will surround your party during the fight. Once your ranged attacker is in position, proceed with the boss battle.

Keep in mind that Balthazar can use Misty Step so there is a possibility that he will teleport to where your ranged attacker is positioned. If that happens, you can either attack him or move further up the rocks to maintain the height advantage.

Once the battle begins Balthazar will summon a total of 20 undead skeletons to fight for him. Take out the three Apostate Destroyers first as these enemies have 48 HP and can deal a lot of damage. Make sure to position your party at the center of the arena to prevent companions being pushed off the sides. If this happens, that party member will be dead for the rest of the fight.

Most of the enemies in this boss fight deal melee damage which means that they need to get close to your party which bunches them close together. Take advantage of this tendency by using an AoE spell like Cloud of Daggers which will enable you to damage multiple enemies at once, making the fight easier to manage.

Start taking out enemies one at a time once you have used up your AoE spells. Move your ranged attacker down to join the rest of the party when they can no longer reach any enemies. Keep in mind that these enemies are weak against Bludgeoning damage, so make full use of that weakness to further increase the damage. Make sure during the battle you use items or spells to top up your health.

While your party is fighting Balthazar's Undead Skeletons, send your strongest attacker to focus on Balthazar. Balthazar’s total health is only 91 HP so you shouldn't have too much trouble killing him in one turn.

If Balthazar survives another turn, he will cast Cloudkill - a spell that creates poisonous gas that deals damage to those who come in contact with it. Immediately move your party members away from it. The next spell Balthazar casts is Misty Step which will allow him to teleport to an unoccupied space that he can see.

When this happens, move the character focusing on Balthazar as close to him as possible. Balthazar won't use Misty Step for his next turn, which gives you enough time to use Dash and close the distance to attack him when the opportunity arises and end the fight.
