Do the Party Quests
In order to progress in Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream it is essential that you gather and craft. There are certain items that you will need to acquire that are locked behind a character's level and in order to obtain them you will need to accumulate enough AP to invest in the character.
The best way to get a lot of AP, so you can level up the character quickly is to complete member specific quests.

Visit Crystal Sparkle Pavilion
Crystal Sparkle Pavilion is located within Roytale and you can go there from the start of the game to accept quests from Kati at the Bar which you can complete and turn in to receive Reputation and materials.
As you progress further into the story and unlock more locations you will be given tougher quests that will reward you rarer rewards when you complete them.

Use Twin Actions
Atelier Sophie 2 has a system for depleting your MP after performing a specific set of skills. You can though perform a move called 'Twin Actions', where two characters will attack with their respective skills consecutively without costing any MP.
You can activate the Twin Actions move on a party member by accumulating TP (Technical Points). Perform basic attacks or blocks inside combat to store up enough TP to perform Twin Actions. This is very important against bosses, as some of the skills that deal the same damage to enemies don't use any MP during this time.

Max Gather in a Location
Keep in mind that Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream will reward you when you gather lots of items from one location. When you level up your tools or a character's ability you will also unlock plenty of new resources from old spots which you can return to and gather, so you add different recipes.
Make sure you gather and mine as much as possible. When your inventory runs out of space simply go back to your Atelier, transfer the items inside your container, and return to start the whole process again.

Do Not Auto Synthesize Gears
Auto synthesis is fine up to a point when you are making ointments and bombs. Just don't use this feature when you need to craft high quality armor and gear as it will just downgrade the products quality.
It is essential that you link the same element multiple times in the cauldron for improved effect and doing it manually will improve your chances of creating a high-quality product for endgame content.
